TomTom 6 Map Transfer

I suspect this is a stupid question and I'll be amazed if you can't do this but when about to purchase a new map for TT6 and my M600 I saw a message to the effect that maps are not transferable between phones.

Does this mean that if I purchase the entirety of western europe for my m600 I will need to buy the maps again when I upgrade my phone to the Kaiser in a month or two?

Thanks

As a general rule, TomTom will only license a map for use on ONE device. Each device has a unique device code which TomTom derives from some internal register.

If you load a map on another device, it will ask you to activate it before you can use it.

They DO allow you to add a 2nd activation from one month after the initial one- you can do this via the website TTCode.com, which will ask for your product code, and device code. It will then issue an Activation code. But if you already have 2 activation codes, it will refer you to TomTom Support. They will require proof that you are genuinely upgrading your phone- usually they want you to fax a copy of the proof of purchase of a new device. When they have that, they will issue a new actovation code.

Some people have managed to get TomTom to issue up to 4 Activation Codes, but it depends on how convincing your case may be :)

So in your case, you can buy TTN for the M600, then upgrade to a Kaiser after one month, and should be OK, but any further upgrades may be more tricky.

As an alternative, have you looked at iGO2006 from DSL Developments? On the whole it is better than TTN, but costs more. Currently not available on MicroSD, but apparently that is coming soon- you have to use the supplied SD card as the system is locked to the card (rather than to any one device)

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. So it sounds like I'm good to go with respect to moving the maps over to my Kaiser when I get it.

Next question on this:

I currently own GB road maps with my m600. If I buy all of Western Europe now (which includes GB) I will be able to uninstall GB and install WE onto my m600. When I upgrade to a Kaiser in a few months I intend to give my m600 to my girlfriend to use simply as a Sat Nav option, although she might use it as a phone as well I guess. I assume I will be able to uninstall WE maps off the m600 and reinstall GB maps again and give it to her, and then install WE maps on the Kaiser. This should be totally legal, right? As I bought both versions separately. Whereas its probably dodgy to install the WE maps on both machines as I'll only have bought it once. Or would that be legal?

Thanks

Blakey

You are technically only allowed to have a Map installed/active on one device, but as you will have purchased 2 maps, you can have one on each device quite legitimately.

If you really need Western Europe now, just buy it and install it on the M600. Once activated, it will always work on that device (and going to TTCode.com will always show you the current and previous activation codes for any given product code, so even if you move the GB folder to a PC for safe keeping, you can move it back at a later date & it will still work, or you will still be able to access the AC.)

When you change to a Kaiser, you can use TTCode.com to enter the Product Code for the WE Map, then the new Device Code (which you will see when you try & run it for the 1st time); you will be given a new Activation Code for that map. but that is the end of it- no further automatic activation codes without approaching TomTom.

You should be aware that the Western Europe map does run very slowly when selecting addresses, as it is one large (950MB) file, rather than a collection of individual country maps, and searches cover the whole file. Also having a lot of POI's active also slows things down. So, for purely UK use, I'd tend to stick to the UK and IE map.
