Guest ewel Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 (edited) When you buy a car you expect an ashtray in it. If its not there the dealer telling you to bring a plastic bag is not going to make you much happier. And so it is with the Windows Mobile and vcards. Everyone knows that smartphones with Windows Mobile do not have the functionality of sending and receiving vcards by sms. In other makes this is basic and normal functionality. What is worse is that they don't offer a good alternative. There are some half baked solutions such as copy and paste, and some software that sends a message containing contact details (Contacts Menu by Ondrej Hanak at http://www.airfagev.com/forum_view.asp?msg_id=148166). Beersoft tried to make a programme a few years ago but met some difficulties, I think because the phone's built-in Outlook software actually blocks vcards. Meanwhile the people at Sunnysoft are selling Sunnysoft vCard for pocket pc's. From what I have read at http://sunnysoft.com/software.php?idarticle=207 it is not actually clear if this enables exchanging vcards by sms, but they do seem to have overcome the problem that Beersoft had met. I am quite amazed that with all the smartphone software makers out there, some of whom produce programmes that are pretty useless for most users, nobody has managed yet to solve this issue for smartphones. Am I the only one who would really want this functionality? Wouldn't you buy software that solves this before you buy some game or other software that you don't really need at all? Is there anyone out there who could have another go at creating some software? Could this forum be a good platform to collect enough votes to convince the Microsoft developers to do something about this? Edited August 11, 2007 by ewel
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 The "Vote if you want application/feature/update XYZ" idea never really works You'll either not get enough votes, or not be able to get the attention of the right developers. But, yes, there have been a few times when sending contacts by SMS would have been immensely useful to me. It wouldn't even have to be vCard format - I wouldn't mind if it just copied all the phone/email fields to a new SMS. I hate the MMS option so much that I'd buy an app if one was available.

My prediction is that Windows Mobile is going to lose big time to iPhone and other makes who understand how to make a device do almost all of the obvious things without complicating life. I am a fan of smartphones because they are hybrids between ppc's and ordinary phones and as such can be fully customised. However the price of the freedom to customise is sometimes very high, paid in the currency of complexity and non-inclusiveness, and too high a price for just about everyone I know. Windows Mobile will become a thing for ppc's and if it survives on smartphones that will probably be due to Apple putting competitive pressure on HTC to deliver more inclusive devices.
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 WM wont lose to iPhone, they're aimed at very different markets. In form factor the iPhone is closer to PPC IMO, so I can't see that putting any pressure on HTC (or others) to keep innovating for Smartphones. Yeah, sometimes the price is high (even too high for me some days) but there isn't anything else that gives me what I want, or even gets me closer to it. The iPhone certainly doesn't.
Guest ombre33 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 *snip* Everyone knows that smartphones with Windows Mobile do not have the functionality of sending and receiving vcards by sms. *snip* they dont? are we talking WM6? because on the vox there is such an option and it does indeed work. i have already used it..

I keep getting people sending me vCards (or Business Cards) from their Nokia phones, which obviously never arrive. I would love a function that will at least received them when they are sent. If anyone can suggest something I can install on my m3100, that would be really useful thanks BillingeUK
