Guest raf300 Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 Does anyone know whether the lobster phone (HTC Monet) have an internal GPS chip which has not been activated? My friend has a Lobster monet phone and it picks up the GPS satellites, am I going mad? I cannot find anything on the web about this. Any help would be great.
Guest greenturtle Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 Hey welcome to forum. I sincerely doubt that his Lobster can pick up GPS satellites with an inbuilt chip however no one has ever dismantled a lobster from what I see on the internet so there is no way of knowing if it did have a hidden chip! but I SERIOUSLY doubt it does. Maybe he is using a bluetooth GPS reciever?

Maybe he is using a bluetooth GPS reciever? I know what you mean as everyone says it doesnt but I have seen it in action. He showed me gpstest 1.04 on the lobster and part of the software as a dart board style screen which shows the sateliites, and it picked up several satelittes. Also he assured me that in the car with tomtom software installed it tells you how fast you are going and when to take the next exit. Would be good if all lobster users tests their phone with gpstest to see if they can pick up anything without using their bluetooth receiver.
Guest greenturtle Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Ok this is very interesting then. I'll dig out my lobster and have a test as well but can you provide pictures of video of proof before people read this and go crazy that there lobsters might have gps?
Guest Shuflie Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 I want to believe this, I really do. However I think that one of two things is happening here. 1. raf300's friend is pulling his chain and is really connecting to a bluetooth GPS hidden somewhere nearby. or 2. raf300 has joined up to do a bit of chain pulling himself. Number 1 is probably the most likely answer, so I'd suggest that raf300 talks to his friend and asks him if the lobster 700TV really has a GPS chip inside which is disabled how he managed to get it enabled?
Guest greenturtle Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 I myself believe that anything is possible but everyone these days loves playing pranks on other people. :) However we musn't rule out that it could be possible like when people discovered the Hermes was missing an aerial for a GPS but it still had the capability! What is GPSTEST 1.04 anyway?

What is GPSTEST 1.04 anyway? OK guys I am new here but I am not pulling anyones' chain. I will be really pissed off if my mate is having me on. I told him I was lookign at gps which would be handy on holiday and he said get a lobster so that is the reason why I have one, or I would have gone the pda route. I will send this forum thread to my mate, I will get video evidence tomorrow. My mate said he bought the lobster intending to buy an additional gps unit . After completing the apps unlock he put gpstest and tomtom on there , it worked without the need of bluetooth GPS. BTW GPStest is made by chart cross.
Guest greenturtle Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Hmm I will be interested to see if he does give us video evidence. Ill test this now on my Lobster and report back on how I get on :)
Guest raf300 Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 I took some video today with my lobster phone, the focus is a little blur but you can see the satellites being picked up. I can assure there are no bluetooth GPS device around.lobster_gps.wmv
Guest greenturtle Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 haha just downloaded that with a GPRS connection at stansted airport. Ok can you get this guy to screenshot the device infortmation in his settings and let us see the ROM version. The video is too bad quality to tell but is that the bluetooth LED I see on? From a very bemused Greenturtle indeed

From a very bemused Greenturtle indeed I will get him to do it. But I remember I checked that last week and compared it to my phone and it was exactly the same. Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Is that the Bluetooth light I see flashing away there? I think so! So did you try it on yours? Let me guess - it didn't work? P
Guest raf300 Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Is that the Bluetooth light I see flashing away there? I think so! So did you try it on yours? Let me guess - it didn't work? P Yes when I bought it I tried straight away. Do you think it is possible HTC made a batch of phones with GPS built in by accident?
Guest raf300 Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Er, no. P On gpstest it scans all the com ports, he said his phone stopped on Com6 then started to pickup the satellites.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 Yes, the COM6 port he'd mapped to his Bluetooth GPS. He's having you on mate. P
Guest raf300 Posted August 14, 2007 Report Posted August 14, 2007 I am sure there must be something, I dont think he is having me on. I have sent him a link to the thread so he can join in with the debate.
Guest raf300 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 I have checked everything. It is time to give up
Guest Alex (nedge2k) Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 just tell him to show you with the bluetooth turned off. and make sure you watch him turning it off! surely that's the obvious solution here?
Guest Underdog_2k Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 that is one ugly phone.. Haven't seen it here in the Netherlands prob. because it's to darn ugly.. to stay on topic.. Companies sell the phones to make a profit, adding a gps chip costs money, if it had a gps chip the would advertise it. On the other hand companies sometimes have surplus materials that they wanna get rid of for what ever reason, f.e. Intel/amd processors good processors become high priced fast units, units that have faults in them become cheap slow ones or even worst celerons :P. But in this case gps chips are a component of the phone not intergrated with the gsm chip. Conclusion: bogus :)
Guest raf300 Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 To Greenturtle Here his my mates system info. Rom: 1.5.351.4 Radio: 140.229.32_01.03.01 RIL ver: 2.002 OS: 5.1.195 (Build 14989.2.6.0)
Guest greenturtle Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Forgot this topic existed! Ok just compared that information to my lobster and its identical to my lobsters specs. I am sorry but Bluetooth on and it stopping on the outgoing port 6 which is also quite ironic seeing as a Smartphone’s outgoing ports can only be 6 and 7 meaning it is a Bluetooth device. Remember that he can be hiding it in a 10m range of the device lol.
