Stop Returning to Today Screen?

Is there a setting that prevents my device always returning to the Today screen whenever I turn it back on? (I don't mean after it's been totally off, just after the display's been off). I'm sure with previous smartphones I've had it's just stayed at whatever program you were running (e.g. Messages, Contacts etc) unless you actually set an option to always return on the Today screen, or the "Today Screen Timeout" had been reached.

What happens now is the display comes back on with whatever it was showing before, but almost immediately it then blanks and the Today screen is painted, plug-in by plug-in. Even if I switched off on the Today screen, when I turn back on it still blanks and re-paints.
