Contacts - Windows Live Messenger vs Outlook

I installed the WM6 ROM and was pleased to find the Windows Live Messenger exe in the Windows directory of the device. I was able to sign in w/o issues, however, it wanted to sync my Messenger contacts with the contacts on my phone. I'm pretty sure I had no choice in the matter. Now they're comingling with my Outlook contacts, which I do not want.

So I deleted them from the Contacts folder. The next time I started up WLM, lo and behold... all my Messenger contacts are gone as well!

Is there any way around this happening? Luckily, I signed into the web-based Hotmail and my contacts were still there.
