Files changed to into broken folder, can't be recovered

I'm having a weird problem with my PDA (Dell Axim X30). Not every time, but 3 times now I've looked at the properties of a file in my built-in storage (ROM) using Total Commander, and the file is converted into a folder (so Built-In Storage/picture.jpg becomes Built-In Storage\picture.jpg\ ) and it's pretty much completely broken at this point. I can't delete it, trying to open the file\folder just results in an error and see no way of recovering it. Anyone seen anything like this before and/or know how I could recover my files and prevent it from happening in the future?
