New Vox Owner

After much deliberation I decided to get myself a HTC Vox over waiting for Vodafone to release the Samsung i620. I am very pleased with the device but there are a few things that I'd like to ask about the phone and the software on it.

1) Windows Update. I haven't opted for a data plan with my contract. Is it possible to use the onboard WiFi to connect to Windows Update?

2) HTC e-Club. Becasue the Vox I purchased is Vodafone branded when I tried to register my device on the HTC website to receive software updates it told me that I could not register and I would have to check with my service provider for updates. I can't seem to find anything on the Vodafone website about updates and I was wondering if any of you guys knew any better.

3) Alarm. My old phone used to turn itself on if an alarm was due to play, however the Vox I have doesn't seem to do that. If I turn the phone on after the alarm was due it plays as soon as the phone is booted up. Is there any way to have the phone turn itself on to play an alarm as it is a bit inconvenient having to keep it on all the time?

4) Bluetooth GPS modules. I noticed in Live Search there was the option of connecting a Bluetooth GPS device. Is this really worth it or is TomTom Navigator a better option?

If there is anything else you guys can recommend then it would be much appreciated. I have already installed some of the other applications in the 'Must Have's' thread and I have used the SPV E650 debrander to remove the bland Vodafone theme that came with my phone.

1: Windows update does not work yet. But when it does, it should work with wifi.

2: no idea.

3: No, this doesn't work. But you can put the phone in Flight mode, so you will not get disturbed.

4: The HTC Vox doesn't have build in gps. So you will always need a external bluetooth gps for tomtom to work.

Thanks for your answers so far.

Bunecarera: What I ment by the alarm thing is that I have sent an alarm to wake me up every morning. However if I turn the phone off, it won't switch itself on to sound the alarm. Is there something I can do so that the phone will turn itself on to play the alarm?

Also, yes I am awear that the phone does not have GPS. Again, what I ment was would buying a Bluetooth GPS module to use in Live Search be worth it as you would still need to be connected to the Internet via WiFi or GPRS to download the map images? Would getting TomTom Navigator be a beter option?

No, the phone will not turn itself on for alarms. You need to leave it on.

I don't know how the live search thing works exactly, but I can imagine you will need to download the maps and routes via gprs or wifi everytime you want to navigate. And since you don't have data acces, it won't help you much on the road... Plus, I don't think it has voice directions like TomTom or any other navigation pack.

Ahh thanks very much for that. I don't think I shall bother with GPS just for now then.

So there is no way to have the phone turn itself on for alarms? Not even a setting in the registry? Seems a bit pointless that you have to leave it on (and also not in Silent mode) for the Alarm to sound. I guess there may be 3rd party applications that I can use instead?

You could put the phone into flight mode, that way you won't receive any texts/calls etc, but the alarm will still work . Then switch it out of flight mode when you want to have the phone features back on.

Thanks for the tip. I've been trying this for a few days now and the battery only drained by 4% in one evening.
