Guest Paul (MVP) Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 T-Mobile web'n'walk is great value. No doubt about it. There is one thing however that has been bugging me of late, and that is their rather bizarrely enforced acceptable use policies. I am on the 'original web'n'walk', and can do pretty much everything on my device. I can surf, sync mails, connect via IM and basically do most of the things that are outside of acceptable use (should I choose), but one thing I can't do is FTP. Fair enough you might think but no, FTP is NOT excluded in T-Mobiles acceptable use terms anywhere as far as I can tell. I don't want to use FTP a massive amount, however sometimes I need to grab a remotely hosted file, or want to back up some data safely off my device. Well, i'm glad to say that with a bit of tweaking, i'm back in FTP action  The answer to my problems lay with the free application 'Total Commander' (version 2.5 beta 3), and the SOCKS proxy that is provided free with my MoDaCo Plus account. By creating an FTP connection, specifying to connect via SOCKS5 and entering my MoDaCo Plus proxy credentials, i'm happily connected and uploading / downloading to my heart's content! Yay! Now whether this is any use to anyone else - who knows - but fingers crossed if there's another tortured soul out there who needs to FTP occasionally and feels they are being deprived, this will put them at rest ;) P
Guest Nemoqwerty Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 Hi Paul, I have what can be best termed a "social conscience" ;) When I bought my device I knew I was going to use lots of data and so I signed up for the Web N Walk Max plan from T Mobile - weighing in at 22.50 GBP / mo it allowed me to use IM, VOIP, connect up to my laptop with their blessing and 30GB monthly data allowance etc. Even then I was aware that I could get away with the 7.50 GBP Web N Walk basic and still get away with using it like this anyway (perhaps no VOIP). Except well, it seems the number of users overusing data on the 7.50 GBP plan far outweigh the number of users on higher plans - but the quality of service for all seems to be impacted. It seems T-Mobile are completely incapable of imposing network controls to promote a better service to the higher rate subscribers. I wonder have you noticed anything you CANT do on the Web N Walk basic plan? If not is there something sufficiently awkward to do on the basic plan that would persuade the average joe to upgrade? If there is no discernible difference between the two services do you think I should bin my social conscience and come join in the 7.50 GBP party  Convince me Im doing the right thing! Please! :D

If not is there something sufficiently awkward to do on the basic plan that would persuade the average joe to upgrade? I'm on the mid plan (£12.50/month) as I want to connect to my work laptop, and use IM officially. I also get HSDPA, when I enable 3G (ie, when battery life is not a concern). I believe the £7.50 users don't get HSDPA, unless they managed to convince customer services a while ago, generally its not enabled??
Guest m3100tony Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Everyone gets HSDPA now. P If I sign up for T-mobile now on the basic £7.50 price plan what is the likelihood of being able to a) connect BT to a laptop and ;) use it for skype. Also is HSPDA available in all 3G areas? Im live in an orange GRPS area which means I cant even make 3g calls at home which is a bit of a pain. Is T-mobile pretty reliable these days? Thanks
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 The 7.50 price plan isn't for VOIP, or tethering. P

Thanks Does it work though? I know its not meant to be! I'm currently on the £8/month deal with orange which happily lets me connect via bluetooth and Skype ect. Will T-mobile do the same (even if it is not meant too). Otherwise will probably stick with the orange deal.
Guest Christopher Woods Posted September 6, 2007 Report Posted September 6, 2007 The 7.50 price plan isn't for VOIP, or tethering. P Well then, they should've removed WModem from my device before shipping it to me then ;) :D I ordered WnW Basic at the same time I placed my main order. I haven't been stopped from using my phone as a modem in any way - I've just been sensible about my data usage when I've been doing so. VERY annoyed by the FTP restriction, eventually got an account credit (which I guess they used to try and shut me up for a couple of months because I was hassling them via email... it worked!) but I separately decided to use a SOCKS proxy (one of my own though, not MoDaCo Plus, but still using Total Commander as I would normally) before I even read this article :D goes to show that great geeky minds are usually thinking down the same lines of thought. imo not officially allowing tethering on the basic package is ridiculous, data usage is data usage and if you're just surfing the web or reading emails it's exactly the same amount of usage as if you did it on the phone (which I do anyway). Plus sometimes it can be an absolute LIFESAVER (like it was tonight!). No torrenting or downloading Service Packs though :D
Guest Confucious Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 There are good reasons why modem usage is banned on the cheapest plkan - you are braking your T&C and I hope you won't complain when they terminate your service.... If you want to use it as a moidem why not go for a package that allows it? T's T&C's are the most transparent and fair I have seen (apart from the FTP problem which does seem to be an oversite), to abuse them is likely to make them tighten them up and ruin things for everyone.
Guest Gisky Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Is FTP usable on the plus and max plans?
