Upgrade from SPV M5000

Well my contract is up with orange and its time to check out what new toys there are to play with, i currently have an SPV M5000 and although i do love it, the touch screen, the big display and the functionality i find the beast is MASSIVE, so i would like to keep as much of what i love about this fone as possible but reduce the overall size.

So, as i have been out of the loop RE whats hot and whats not in the smartphone world i entrust my question to the experts on here =)
