Closing programmes

Quickie for you

When I interrogate my SPV M3100 under settings/memory and running programmes, I see that there are still programmes running which I closed a while ago. Are these slowing the unit down, and if so do I have to continually go into settings/memory/running programmes and stop all runnig programmes, or is there a routine which can close these down properly.

Ta!

Unless they have specific Close, or Exit menu items, Windows Mobile programs are designed to reside in memory- the 'Close' cross at the top right of the screen is actually a 'Minimise' button for most applications.

The OS is supposed to be intelligent enough to close an unused program if memory gets low, but it is a bit hit & miss. I'd recommend occasionally doing as you have done, and manually closing programs you aren't currently running, and won't need during the current session.

As long as your Program Memory stays above about 10MB, there should be little impact on speed, but if you then open a large program (like Media Player) there will definitely be a big hit.

You can buy programs that change the Close button to genuinely close programs, and most of these also have an exception list. You can also buy memory managers that kill unused programs and regain the memory used.

Thanks Neil, any idea what and where I can hold hold of these programmes

I assume you are running windows mobile 5 and not a cooked rom as pretty much all the Windows mobile 6 roms have the HTC task manager included, which does this for free (and even works most of the time).

Unless warranty issues etc terribly paramount, WM6 is the way to go.

The SPV M3100 from Orange will never have an official WM6 upgrade, but there are a lot of 'unofficial' ones around- the Black series from Jasjammin are the most popular (do a google search!) Be aware that a ROM update will invalidate your Orange warranty, though it is usually possible to return to the original ROM.

Although some WM6 ROM's have the HTC Task Manager installed, a lot of folk have found it causes the device to slow down significantly (but you only notice it when you change to something better ;) ) For WM5, Magic Button is still the most compact and reliable manager, but others like SpB PocketPlus and SBSH iLauncher are good. They do both use a fair amount of memory though, and can slow down devices.

I'm running Jasjamming's Black Majik ROM and I can't fault it - just don't install the Video Dialer unless you really need it 'cos it turns the ROM from a cheetah to a tortoise. But if you do there's a setting in Jasjamming's Pimp-my-black that disables it.

HTC X-Button will do what you want regarding the closing programs issue. Google for it.
