GPS not working

Hi,

I can't GPS signal no matter what I try. I didn't change any default settings in External GPS.

I've installed TomTom and Google maps but neither application is seeing GPS device. In TomTom I get no valid GPS signal and in Google Maps I get not able to initialise the GPS. I've tried using both of the appications with clear view of the sky and left the phone for about 30mins to try and find the satelites.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking I'm having a faulty device but I don't want to replace it just in case I get the new one with SOD problem.

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried getting your initial fix with QuickGPS? That's what worked for me. Once I used that, I haven't had any problems with TomTom getting a fix but it seems that I usualy need to get a fix with TomTom first before I can use Google maps.

Yes, I've tried QuickGPS that didn't help.

Confirm tried as in:

- Launch QuickGPS

- Press Download button and check data valid for 6 days 23 hours

- Close QuickGPS

- Launch TomTom in a place with unobstructed view of the sky.

QuickGPS is not a GPS program per se, it simply downloads the latest orbital data for all the GPS satellites up there and speeds up the process of obtaining the initial fix for any GPS-using programs (TomTom, Google Maps etc.)

If TomTom says 'No valid GPS Signal' it means it can see your GPS receiver, but hasn't downloaded enough data for a fix. If it can't see the GPS Receiver, the message is ' No GPS Device'.

Some locations seem to have a poor satellite visibility- go outside into the open air, with no trees or high buildings, then open TomTom, and go to the GPS screen and see how it does (tap the GPS Signal Level icon on the map screen, then again on the next screen). I've known it to take up to 15minutes for a first fix.

If it still won't get a fox, it suggests faulty hardware.

To see if your GPS works at all try using GpsViewer. Available here:

http://pocketmap.com/accessories/GpsViewer.exe

Open it up

select com4,

leave baud rate at 4800

press 'open gps'

Press any of the 'start' buttons.

You should see data in the window after 10 - 15 seconds.

Select the GPS status tab and look for blue bars.

This will at least tell you if your GPS is working.

Leave it running while you try TomTom or Google maps to help it get a fix.

Good luck

All working now. I had to do a hard reset.

It has been said so many times but it won't hurt to repeat it:

WARNING: Don't touch any settings in "External GPS"!!! Otherwise your GPS will not work and you will have you hard reset you phone!

I made the mistake of going into External GPS Settings on my Vario III to have a look at them. I didn't change anything but couldn't get GPS to work after looking at them. I did a hard reset (I hadn't installed much anyway) then tried again with Google Maps. After a quick run of QuickGPS and a sit on the window sill for 5 minutes I was able to track my location. I even used it for a short period on my drive home from work. It had no problem tracking my car and downloading the maps as it went.
