Tried this at the weekend, the kit cost £11 from Maplins. Including a 2.5 to 3.5 jack coverter.

Thought it was pretty impressive, that you could reel off your mp3 on your car stereo.

The sound is a little lightwieght, need to turn up the base.

The phone did ring, it just stopped playing the tune - I can't remember if the ring was through the speaker, then I had to pull the plug from the phone and answer it. Saw that they also do a handfree kit using a similar adaptor. This might be more suited. I gave mine back afetr trying it as it was a bit fiddly for me, especially without a in-car holder.

I bought the handsfree option from Maplins, cost 8.50 and has a mic attached. Works very well. You can still play mp3's through the stereo but it cuts that out and rings through the car speakers when you receive a phonecall.

Yep, I use that adapter to play CDs through car stereo since I can't afford a decent one [all $$ spent on SPV] hehe.. Joking.. Really though, it works fine and the base can be turned up on the stereo. Have not tried it with the phone yet, but I just got a 2.5>3.5 thingie the other day.. Still prefer CDs - burn easily and no wasted battery on SPV/

Did anything come of the discussions in the hardware forum regarding car kits? The CD player in my car (SONY CDX-4000R if that helps) has what the manual describes as a 'Telephone ATT Control Output' - is there a lead I could get that could connect my phone to that, with a little external microphone as well? It would be jolly nice to have the stereo mute when the phone rings, and take the call through the car speakers. However, as a matter of principle I object to buying manufacturers car kits, as they're flipping expensive and no use to me once I've had my annual handset upgrade. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Wonder if there are any car stereos that take sd cards. Just done a quick search but couldn't find any. There are car stereo MP3 players but these are MP3 cd-players.

To answer myself, I did some more searching and found this link . I think £229 is an excellent price. The only thing holding me back is the fact that it only states that it takes MMC cards. I know that these are more or less the same as SD cards but I am a little worried all the same.

Hmm spend the best part of the value of my car, on a stereo.

Or get a cassette adapter and 2.5-3.5mm converter for 20 quid and play them straight off my SPV....

Yep, thats fine for the budget conscious. But I was on the look out for a decent stereo so I might as well get one that is 'compatible' with my spv. A lot less messy than those cassette adaptors, plus I get tagged track info on my stereo and a remote control.

 All I need now is a car ;)

Or you could get a FM transmitter that plugs into the spv headphone socket and use an empty fm band on the car radio. I've got one but haven't tried it yet. Bought it for $12 or $13 two yrs ago for my jornada.

Mono,

The maplin one cost £10 and has a 2.5mm jack plug, no adapter needed. Works fine as well. Combine that with a car charger from PDA add ons..........

Oops that will be £20 in total then. Maffs ain't my strong point!!!

WARNING Ethanol!!! read this, its a response from bluepoint:-

James,

Thanks for your mail.

Unfortunately the Los Angeles MP72 radio only takes MMC type cards.

The radio is in stock and can be with you in a couple of working days. It can be ordered by calling (01993) 811 115 during office hours, or online by following the link above.

If you have any further questions, please do get in touch.

Regards.......David Naylor

There are a few stereos around that play mp3s/wmas from memory cards but I think most of them use Memory Stick (and Sony's "secure" proprietary data transfer s/w that goes with it ) - that Blaupunkt is the only one I've seen that uses MMCs (never liked Blaupunkt meself). If you really want to play your SPV through your car head unit I'd get a CD player with an aux input (some come with them, others you can buy an adaptor for) and plug the SPV into that, but personally I'd rather put my mp3s on a CD-RW and get and mp3 compatible stereo. At the moment Car Audio Direct are doing a Kenwood mp3 head unit for £150 which is pretty cheap - have a look here, and if you really want to you can get an aux input adaptor for £20. I've ordered from them before and they seem pretty good (apologies for advert!).

I strongly suspect that the Panasonic will make you transfer your tracks to and from the SD "securely" (read; pain in the a**e), like Sony do, so SPV formatted cards are unlikely to work.

Ethanol: Before you buy have a look on Car Audio Direct's forum (www.talkaudio.co.uk); it's quite friendly and there's some handy hints on there. I was tempted by evil 6*9s before they converted me!

You might be able to get an aux in adaptor for your CD player that allows you to plug in your SPV. Generally if your head unit has "CD changer control" you can get an adaptor (for most major brands anyway).
