First of all I'd like to say hiya all :D

This is my first post on these fine forums, I stumbled across them whilst looking for info about the Vario III.

Basically I have an XDA Mini S (HTC Wizard) running WM5 and I have a shed load of software installed on it.

I wish to keep all this software but re-installing it ALL will take an age. Is there a way I can make a backup of my WM5 device and port it onto my Vario III maintaining my settings like TomTom Favorites, etc, etc.

The programs I currently have installed are (mostly installed on my micro SD):

Applications & Tools:

Macromedia Flash Player ActiveX

PPCLink Lexisgoo English Dictionary + Lexisgee

PC Counselor Tweaks2k2 .NET

Conversions

MSN

Resco Today Plugin

SPB Time

SPB GPRS Monitor

Dinarsoft MemMaid

SK Software SK Tools

Nomad Electornics PocketStars

TCPMP - The Core Pocket Media Player

AE Software AE Button Plus (I don't need the settings for this as the buttons will be different and I will have to reinstall this one.)

BizDev NetUse

Pocket Innovation System Monitor

Vieka vBar

GAMES:

SPB Air Islands

SPB Bubbles

SPB Arkaball

SPB Arkaball II

SPB Xonix II

PDAmill Gamebox Solitaire

PDAmill Gamebox Classics

ZIO Interactive Fifa 2002

Bust'em Retail

Ziosoft Age of Empires Scenarios

Ziosoft Age of Empires Campaigns

Ziosoft Age of Empires Gold Edition

I don't know if this is possible.

If anyone knows I'd greatly appreciate any info you have ;)

Also as a side note... Is there much difference between WM5 and WM6? I didn't even know there was a WM6 lol. Is it much better than WM5 and if so why?

Finally, is any of this software going to be obsolete with WM6? As in is the extra functionality I get from any of these programs already built into WM6?

Cheers,

DJ_Enigma

p.s. sorry for the long winded 1st post

Blimey- I thought I had a lot of stuff!

As a general rule, you can't use any Restores between different OS versions, as many of the core OS files are different- for example your current PDA needs the addition of .net Compact Framework 2 for some programs to work, but in WM6 it is within the ROM, and restoring it from a backup cobbles things in a big way ;)

Sprite do offer a 'ROM Update' facility which you could try; be warned though, that this is a very flakey operation in some circumstances. If it doesn't work you haven't lost anything apart from some time, and a hard reset

You can certainly copy all the content on your current MiniSD card to a new MicroSD card for the Vario III. A lot of your programs are happy running from the storage card, but will need the license keys re-entering, and manual recreation of the Program Files links.

TomTom is a bit different- tecnically it will work fine as it is- it doesn't use any registry entries. However, it will need reactivating, as TTN is linked to the Device Code of your current device. You are allowed 1 further activation for a new device which you can acheive from ttcode.com, as long as you have the original Product Code for your maps. Any more than that, and you have to contact TomTom support, and provide proof of purchase for the new device.

I have to say, that despite the number of apps you have, you would be better reinstalling from scratch, to avoid glitches.

Good lucj with the new device, and welcome to MoDaCo

I agree - you would be far better off re-installing.

Some programs do not work on WM6 that did on WM5 - in particular I would check SPB's website for compatability problems. Was the Mini S QVGA? If not you might find some of the games will not run in thois resolution - again, best check the website for each one to make sure they are compatable.

WM6 is generally faster and better integrated with Outlook than WM5 but no 'major' differences viable, just smoother and nicer with a lot of improvements behind the scenes.

Getting the Vario II the biggest improvement you will see is that on T-Mob data is cheap - and these devices cry out for cheap data - you'll love it!

Have fun.

Cool cheers for the info ;)

Looks like a re-install is best, tbh I probably don't need ALL of that on there any more.

My XDA Mini S has a nice screen, but I don't know if it is the same resolution as the Vario III. Anyone know?

I assumed it is the same. As i understand it the XDA Mini S is a Vario I and the Vario III is just a WM6 version with 3g.

Mine arrives tommorrow

They both have the same screen resolution and size- probably the same part number in fact!
