This may have been obvious to others but it just dawned on me to try it and it works no problem.

I was worried that using the internal gps wouldn't give me enought battery time for some gps based uses. Like many, i already have a bluetooth gps, that gives ample hrs of usage, but thought i wouldn't be able to use it due to the problem with changing the microsoft gps comms settings.

As it happens, which i should have realised, just setting up the bt gps on comm 6 without touching the problematic hardware/software comms settings, works fine. just select comm 6 rather than auto or comm 4 within the required app. The internal gps doesn't start up, therefore longer battery life.

sorry if this is obvious, but worth being aware of i think.
