Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Opera Mobile, undoubtedly the leading alternative web browser for Pocket PC / Smartphone, has received a full version 8.65 release! The new version, the last scheduled before a massive overhaul in version 9, is available at the Opera Mobile site. A free 30 day trial is available, after which the application is priced at $24. MoDaCo Plus members will be pleased to learn that the application remains a MoDaCo Plus benefit! New features for version 8.65 include...Support for Macromedia Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC FlashLite 2.1 Text Wrap in Desktop Mode Grab and Scroll (only applicable to Pocket PC) Web search in address bar Save image Copy text Send link as e-mail, SMS, and MMS Import bookmarks from Pocket Internet Explorer Desktop Mode as default viewing mode You can view the full changelog at http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/winmobile/865/. Opera is a permanent fixture on my devices, and is my default browser - it's so much better than PIE! Not used it? Give it a a try ;) P
Guest briguy Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 MoDaCo Plus members will be pleased to learn that the application remains a MoDaCo Plus benefit! Does this cover the Smartphone version as well? The Plus page currently just mentions Opera for PPC.
Guest doctormetal Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 Too bad they made a serious screwup in this release. I had the beta version running on my tytn II (dutch version) and it worked perfectly. When the final version was released I tried it but it would not even start. Lter they added this statement to the site: Notice: A bug causing problems on non-English devices (Opera 8.65 WM) has been discovered. We are working to correct this, and expect to have a new build out shortly. How did the this slipped by their quality control (if they have any). Don't get me wrong, it still is a great browser and I will surely use it when it works.
Guest Confucious Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 The other problem is that it doesn't work with Vueflo - but that's being worked on....
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 8, 2007 Report Posted October 8, 2007 I'm really trying to like this. I just find the way bookmarks are handled to be very clunky. In PIE I can click on a soft key and have instant access to my favourites. In Opera I have to click on a soft ket, select a menu then select Manage Bookmarks. I would also like to be able to control the text size without having to change the zoom on a page.
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 8, 2007 Report Posted October 8, 2007 Select menu -> go to... P That's a big help, thanks ;)
Guest Shuflie Posted October 8, 2007 Report Posted October 8, 2007 Select menu -> go to... P It's action -> goto... on mine. ;)
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 8, 2007 Report Posted October 8, 2007 Well, that WAS just off the top of my head ;) P

Guest GSNGuy Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Well, just downloaded the trial, but looks like I'll be buying this - 1000% better than IE that came with my TynTn, and a good rival to the browser on the N95 Phew, thought I was stuck with IE for a bit there! Mike
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I can't wait for Opera 9, which is going to be streets ahead of even this version. ;) :(| P
Guest Menneisyys Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I've posted a quick review of the app (along with all the other Web browsing news) to http://www.modaco.com/content/Smartphone-G...pb-Pocket-Plus/
Guest Monolithix Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Having used Opera more extensively than before over the past few weeks I'm still unconvinced. In terms of features i think its no better than PIE (with pocket+ 4 for tabbed browsing) to be honest, and i'm afraid the interface loses hands down to PIE! One handed/stylus free usage anyone? The only reason i keep it is because it can handls some pages much better than PIE ;)
