Guest lozzd Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 So I've got my Vario III, its SO NICE. It's like a Ferrari compared to my banger Mini S! So fast and shiny! ;) So I'm also new to the experience of actually not having to pay for data (I've got web+walk plus woo! No more limited to 512kb!) and accordingly I set up an email account to check every 15 minutes. But it seems this "15" minutes only applies when the phone is on! I didn't get any alerts for new emails, despite knowing there were some in the account, and then as soon as I turned on the phone, bing! the new messages appeared (if you open messages quick enough you can see it starts the send and recieve as it turns on) IS this intentional? surely not? Anyone else had this problem?
Guest hotphil Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 If the phone is off, how are you expecting it to pick up your mails? As the device will be using the 'phone' connection to send/receive mails, is it not obvious that turning the phone connection off, also stops emails being picked up?
Guest lozzd Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 Let me rephrase that since you think I'm a complete idiot. Sorry to not make it clear. The DEVICE has to be ON not in STANDBY mode. I should've said that the first time.

Guest Neil5459 Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 Your experience is NOT as it should be! If you have emails set to check every 15 minutes, then that's what they should do whether the device is ON or in Standby. If in standby, the process is 'invisible' in that the machine will go into a low power state with the screen off, do the checking, then go back into standby. To be alerted to new Emails when in standby mode, go to Start/Settings/Sounbds & Notifications. In the dropdown box, find Messaging- New Email and then tick your notification method- either a sound, or to flash the LED for xx minutes. Once that's done, you will see if you have a new Email, even with the device remaining in standby as the LED will flash for the set period, or till the message is read. If it doesn't work that way, there may be something wrong with either the device, or its configuration.
Guest lozzd Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 I had double checked the configuration Neil, thanks for your help. I think it's actually solved itself, or I was being stupid and it was just good timing I opened the email app when I did. I left my phone charging overnight whilst I went out, came back, and had a new email waiting for me (and the phone was in standby still). So either it works properly only when plugged in or it's now fixed ;)
Guest lozzd Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 (edited) Ah ok, just read the thread. Very interesting stuff there. So my email was checked last night because it was plugged in! Well I'm now testing their theories. So far they are correct. At least ONE check happens when you force off the phone. I have sent myself another test email and we will see if it comes through. If not I will then set my device timeout to 1 minute and quit using the power button. I find it too hard to press anyway :D Stupid thing. EDIT: Well that blew that theory into the water. It just alerted me about my second email. HA! I'm pretty sure I put it into sleep myself. Will do more testing. EDIT, 12 hours later Well I have some bad news. At least not for me though  My phone is now doing as it should. I made sure I turned it off manually, sent myself another email, 15 minutes later, ping! New email. And so for the rest of the day, I used it like I normally do, e.g. lock then power off using button, put in pocket, and I kept getting email alerts no problems. Hurrah ;) So i'm pretty sure mine didn't work at first but now it does, which is great! I hope it stays that way. Edited October 7, 2007 by lozzd
Guest lozzd Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 2 days later Well its completely random now. Works one day but not others. So frustrating ;)
Guest WILBUR Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 2 days later Well its completely random now. Works one day but not others. So frustrating ;) I agree with the randomness... sometimes when in standby it downloads email, other times just after i turn it on it downloads a whole bunch. I'll monitor it even more closely now and report back
Guest lozzd Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 Well I've been checking it. Every time I go to turn on my phone, i go straight into messages to see if it starts connection. I'd say it was about 50/50. With no correlation between "forcing" the device off using the button or anything else. ;) I just want a stable email checking!
