Guest krazyasif Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) Hi Sorry for being a novice to pdas (a little embarrasing as its probably something simple hehe - we all been in this place one time or another though) :) How do I transfer games, apps etc using ActiveSync from my PC to my PDA? :( Anyone care to share step by step guide (i.e what to do... where to save etc) I bought a "100 best programmes and 1000 games for your PDA" cd from ebay and have been trying and trying to download them onto my phone (Orange SPV M700i) but when I tranfer them it always says something like "This is not a known pda application" - something along those lines .... my phone doesnt recognise the file! ;) ARGH! :( You know the setup files? I copy and paste that from my PC to My Docs in my pda by using ActiveSync ... am I doing something wrong? <_< Please help! BTW i've successfully transferred themes and music to my phone! Please show me step by step how to download games etc onto my phone :D Also is it possible to have the programmes (i.e. Games, applications) to be saved onto my 2 Gig Memory Card so that I can use them from there? My Phone only has 64MB Memory Many Thanks in Advance Asif Edited October 15, 2007 by krazyasif
Guest Neil5459 Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Hi Asif- welcome to Modaco. There are 2 normal methods for loading applications onto a mobile device. Generally the method depends on the type of installation file supplied. 1) If the installation file is an .exe file, it must be run on the PC while the PPC is connected via ActiveSync. Running the exe will initiate an installation process on the PC, then use A/S to transfer the file to the PPC, where it will then run. At that point you will get a dialogue screen asking whether to install to main memory or the storage card. 2) If the installation file is a .cab file, you need to connect the PPC, invoke Activesync, then using Explore, manually copy the .cab file into the main memory, or the storage card. Alternatively if you want to copy a lot of cab files at once, put the MiniSD card into a card reader in the PC, and use Explorer to copy the files (I have a CABS folder on my SD card for this purpose). Once the file(s) is/are on the system, use File Explorer on the PPC to locate the .cab file, and just tap it to run the installer. Locations: Any file which need to load at startup, or is on the Today Screen should be installed to Main (Device) memory. Anything else can generally be installed to a Storage Card. I would also strongly advise using a backup program like SpB BAckup or Sprite Backup. If you are going to be playing a lot with a multi-app CD containing '000's of apps, it is likely that you will meet the situation where you run short of memory, or encounter a bad program ;) Having a reference backup to reload after a hard reset is useful. Beware also that these CD's usually only contain evaluation copies of programs, so if you want to keep using them, you would need to purchase/register. There is a lot of good free stuff around, but there is much more rubbish :( Do a search on this forum for recommended freeware.
