Guest Superchimp Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Just got my TytanII which is replacing a well-worn Tytan and so far quite pleased with it. I had the 'Black' firmware update and extra comms buttons which allowed me to turn off the 3G aerial on my Tytan thus extended battery life from 8hours to 4 days. Before the firmware update I used Bandswitch which allowed me to do the same thing. Now I've just charged my TytanII and I've watched the battery level deplete before my eyes and I'd really like to know if there is a tweak that will allow me to do the same as on my Tytan. I have already tried Kaiser Tweak which turns off all data but I need GPRS to remain on for push email so that's no good (unless it is updated to do what I want). Any ideas out there?
Guest Subliminal Aura Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 What happens if you change your phone settings to phone settings > band > GSM I used to have gprs under GSM have things changed ?
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 That's what I've started to do on my VIII. For push email during the day I don't need 3G. I switch back to it when I want to surf the net. Ideally I'd like a program that could toggle between the two settings.
Guest mandt Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 There are a few Comm manager cabs floating about on xda-devs that have a 3G disconnect buttons, and leave GPRS on, making life nice and simple ;)

Guest mandt Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) That one is ok, but there is a 9 button version that suits the Kaiser perfectly >>HERE<< champsak could you edit your post to link to the thread, not the attachment? that way people can see what they're downloading read the relevant thread ;) Oh and Welcome to MoDaCo :( Edited October 23, 2007 by mandt
Guest champsak Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) Looking at the screen shot of the 10 button version ... which button switches from 3g to 2g? That one is ok, but there is a 10 button version that suits the Kaiser perfectly >>HERE<< champsak could you edit your post to link to the thread, not the attachment? that way people can see what they're downloading read the relevant thread ;) Oh and Welcome to MoDaCo :( Edited October 23, 2007 by champsak
Guest mandt Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Bugger I posted the wrong link!! ;) edited my post, cheers again :(

Turning off 3G is fine but I need to have the GPRS on for push email. I'll try the other solution which is manually changing th band to see if that works. However, I recall that the Tytan had one aerial for GSM/GPRS and another for 3G. When you pressed th button it actually turned off the 3G aerial which is where the battery saving came in. Not sure if switching the band will have the same effect.
Guest mandt Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Oh I give up ;) there's definitely a 9/10 button Kaiser Comm manager cab that lets you disconnect the 3G and leave the GPRS active, I've used it myself. Dig around and you'll find it, which is more than I could do it seems :(
Guest Neil5459 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 If you don't mind spending $14, then Bandswitch is an excellent program. Versions up to 1.2.4 were free, and you may still be able to find a link. It sits in the tasktray, and allows not only 3G/GPRS switching, but also selective enable/disable of the various data connection settings and WLAN or Bluetooth. Any switch from 3G to GPRS and back does involve a power cycle of the phone radio.

My concern is that it may not be compatible with the Kaiser but I'll try it out and let you all know how I get on. Thanks for the links though, I'll keep watching the threads to see how the comms page develops. Someone is bound to come up with a neater solution sooner or later.
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I've installed BandSwitch on my VIII and it works fine. I'm trying to decide whether it is worth spending $14 on when I can change the settings manually. I guess the switch to UMTS for a specified time is useful.
Guest Superchimp Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Okay I've tried Bandswitch version 1.2.3 but this definitely doesn't work. I've tried a variety of settings but when specifying GPRS, 3G still comes on.
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I used v2.4.2 on my VIII and it worked fine. I have uninstalled it though since a shortcut to the Phone config panel is almost as quick. I don't think the app is worth $14.
Guest Superchimp Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I've uninstalled Bandswitch as well and found that the 10 button Comm Manager now works. I did a soft reset since installing the new Comm manager which maybe kicked it into action. Pity the 10th button is Infra-red as there is no Infra-red function on the TytanII.
Guest mandt Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 THANK YOU SUPERCHIMP!!! honestly I thought I was going mad, I was positive it worked! :( P.S. beam also applies to Bluetooth ;)
Guest DJ_Enigma Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 will switching the band to GSM really help my battery last longer? Surely it's all still using the same battery to maintain a connection regardless of connection speed? I don't know anything about these things so please prove me wrong ;) DJ
Guest Phil Lee Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 3G uses more battery than 2G. This is because the signal strength is weaker causing the phone to have to do more work to maintain a connection. Since switching to 2G for most of the time and only using 3G when I've needed to access the net I have noticed my battery life to be a lot better.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 26, 2007 Report Posted October 26, 2007 The 10th button is actually 'Beam', which also applies to Bluetooth! P
Guest snowgum Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I've found that when I go to phone, band, and then switch from auto to GSM, I'm still getting a G icon on the top of the phone. Does this mean that 3G is still active??? Sorry for my ignorance. Matthew 3G uses more battery than 2G. Guest mandt Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 A single G in the top bar means GPRS (2G) is available
Guest yoda6 Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 I think I've spotted a problem with these comm managers and it is this. If the 3G button replaces the data connection button and allows you to toggle between 3G and GPRS, how do you turn off the data connection altogether without using flight mode, which also disables voice and SMS?
Guest mandt Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 Just tap your G /3G icon in the top bar and hit 'disconnect' If you don't have a disconnect button you can add it with a registry tweak: http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Windows_M...s#Miscellaneous OR hitting the 3G button in Comm manager cycles the phone on and off, thereby disconnecting your data connection
