remote unlock for Orange UK i600?

Recently picked up an i600--I really like it but want to use it on a network other than Orange. I tried getting an unlock code through my IMEI number from these guys, but they weren't able to do it so they gave me credit to use their remote unlocking solution.

The software won't properly interact with the phone--it doesn't seem to see it as a modem. Both USB drivers I've seen for it (the "Blackjack Modem Driver" and "Samsung CDMA Modem 4.34") create a windows-mobile-based device in device manager's network adapters but they don't create a usb modem. The blackjack seems to have an option in Connections -> USB where you can choose modem, but I only see ActiveSync and USB Storage device on my i600.

I thought it might be a WM6 vs WM5 issue, so I reverted back from WM6 to the unbranded WM5 but that hasn't fixed it.

Is there something I'm forgetting to do? Should I give up on trying to unlock the phone myself and ask Orange to do it?
