I recently bought 2 HTC Kaisers in a phoneshop in Holland and discovered that they had different screens.

Screen 1:

  • Looks darker (more black) when switched off.
  • Looks less bright when switched on.
  • Has more contrast.
  • Colours have more saturation.
  • Has brighter colours.
  • Default black HTC logo in right hand corner is hardly visible.
  • Worse visibility in sunny conditions.
  • Smaller viewing angle.

    • Looks lighter (more green) when switched off.
    • Looks brighter when switched on.
    • Has less contrast.
    • Colours have less saturation.
    • Colours look less bright.
    • Default black HTC logo in right hand corner is clearly visible.
    • Better visibility in sunny conditions.
    • Less smal viewing angle.

I tried to make some pictures but my camera is not good enough to see the differences.

For everyday use I prefer the second screen because its better visibility outside and in the car.

I find it very strange though that this product is shipped with different specifications.

No differences in the manuals about it however.

Anyone else with the same experience?

Hi

Sounds to me one has a transreflective screen and the other doesn't. This may explain why some say the Kaiser is transreflective and others say it isn't.

It is possible HTC are getting supply problems of one type or the other so are changing the types of screen. The spec for the Kaiser does not mention a transreflective screen.

Typically a transreflective screen will not have quite so good picture quality indoors, but will be visible in direct sunlight, often taking on a metalic look outside and colours will not be very staturated in daylight, but the screen is very useable.

A transmissive LCD (like on computer monitors) will have better more saturated colours and better picture quality inside, but will be almost invisible outside certainly in bright light or sunlight.

It is not very good that HTC are doing this, as the characteristics mean that they look very different, so people buying them will get completely different results from the display.

companies like these will state in the manual, they have the rights to change specification without further notice.

from what i have heard, early batches of the tytn 2 had many problems with their screen, there were too many dead pixels, so may be it's just a change of screen supplied from different manufacture.
