Making my own GPS Maps

In the past I have used some software on my PlaystationPortable which read from a MapFormat I am not entirely sure about. It basically reads from image files which are structured in a way to provide multi-layer viewing (Zoom).

I live in Jersey in the Channel Islands and there is pretty much no map Data.

My experiments on the PSP were successfull, except for the lack of a GPS reciever on my PSP it all worked except tracking.

I used the following 2 apps - Google Map Download and MSR Map Cruncher. This allowed me to load a custom PNG, create a map, add coordinates to locations and lock in the map etc.

I am unsure what kind of 'Format' this is and am therefore a little lost about finding software which can utlise my self-made maps.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers.

MapCruncher looks very cool!

What are you actually hoping to do tho? You say map data is limited in Jersey, but it is covered by Google Maps, Live Search, Virtual Earth and Yahoo Go, which all do live position display I believe?
