Guest Muzza Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Hi, I'm thinking on setting my email up to direct push to my phone. Does anyone know how much data I would use just to keep the connection open and sync'd, (assuming there is no email, which would obviously vary) I'm on t-mob WnW with the 1gb (unlimited!! ;) ) package, so i have that capacity, I'm more curious from a geek point of view rather than cost point of view. Cheers,
Guest Monolithix Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I've got the 3 X-series (1GB FUP). I always have push email on. My lowest usage to date is 2.5MB in a month ;)
Guest chucky.egg Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 There is a formula floating around somewhere, but in part it depends on the heartbeat interval (which in part is determined, as I understand it, by network conditions) I think the best case was 1Mb/month, based on working hours 5 days per week in a 4 week month
Guest jimbouk Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 The data pulse is supposed to be 3kb and it is supposed to be sent between every 5 and 45 mins (depending on network conditions). So if we assume that a pulse goes every 15 mins say, then it would use 9mb per month if left on 24/7 - but is assuming pretty bad network conditions - and no actual emails or syncs. The average monthly usage I would estimate for a few daily emails/calendar/contact changes will be around 15 mb a month.
Guest Muzza Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 nice one, good answers guys. doesn't seem to be a significant amount then in proportion to my data plan, i will give it a go and see how it gets on. thanks,
Guest Monolithix Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 Ah yes sorry, reading those replies reminded me i have it set to stop syncing between 11pm and 9am!
Guest jimbouk Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 The heartbeat and actual sync procedure use very little actual data. The real risk is the actual content that is synced. If you have concerns, then set it to only sync first 5kb of emails and no attachments. You can easily still get full emails and attachments simply by clicking on the appropriate link if you really need it.
Guest Neil5459 Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 Just to add my 2 pennorth! 4Smartphone.net use a 15 minute 'heartbeat' which they estimate as using about 4MB per month with Direct Push turned off during the night. So, whichever way you do it, not likely to impact much on your 1GB allowance ;)
