Guest pingubox Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 (edited) I'm considering getting a Kaiser, but there's one thing I need to know - will using wi-fi to browse the internet count as data usage or is it free? And similarly, which GPS programs won't use data? I have used a standard candybar phone up until now, so I'm sadly not in the know about such things. Thanks in advance. Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Using WiFi is free. GPS programs which have maps on the device won't use data (e.g. TomTom, CoPilot), GPS apps with offboard maps WILL use data (e.g. Google Maps, Live Search, Yahoo! Go). P

Guest jimbouk Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 (edited) Using wifi only costs money if you use a paid for wifi access point... such as a Hotspot, if you aren't a member of the scheme. Edited November 5, 2007 by jimbouk

Exactly so. This was one of my concerns too. I have a Voda v1615 (same thing) and run a a Wi-Fi network while at home. I've set up the device up to use Wi-Fi while at home and to turn off any cellular data cnnections. That works fine: I can see from the GPRS monitor that it uses precisely zero data from the celuular network while I'm at home.

No need to turn of 3g or gprs as the Kaiser will use Wifi as default if it is available and only use gprs/3g if no Wifi connection exists. The same goes for Activesync pass through internet access. AFAIK

If there is active data exchange occuring over GSM/3G at the time WiFi is turned on, it will not always switch to the WiFi signal until the program requesting data is restarted. I've seen this with both PIE and Email on my Trinity (P3600) and X7500, both running WM6
