Recommendations for Sat Nav on Touch?

I'm continuing to enjoy all the delights that are possible with my new HTC Touch and thought about adding a Sat Nav package to increase it's functionality.

I already have a Garmin Nuvi in the car, so i'm just looking for a cheapish back-up really to use on-foot or when i dont have the Nuvi with me. I also have a couple of Bluetooth GPS receivers, so i only really need the software.

So, what's the best option to go for?

Your thoughts please!

Great find! Seems just what i wanted. However, although i managed to download the 7-day trial software, the site bombs when i try to download the UK maps. I guess it's no use without the maps!

Update: I read the rest of the posts under the Modaco link above and found the problem. The link to the maps needs to end with United_Kingdom.zip, not uk.zip. Just downloading it now.

Thanks again for the link!

Beware the version sold cheap isn't the same version you can trial!

CoPilot is my fave nav atm...

CoPilot on the Touch?

I tried to install v6 and it seemed incredibly slow and then freaked out altogether.

I was thinking about Route66 (their website's been down for ages now, unless I'm going to the wrong place)

Needs to be light on memory for the Touch it seems to me. R66 ran lovely on my Tornado, so I'm hoping there's a PPC version.

Thanks for the comments. I had looked into the Maporama, but was put off by the discussions elsewhere in this forum, not least the fact that the bought version is more limited than the freebie trial as you said Paul.

I read a lot of good stuff about CoPilot on here - sounds great and has the additional benefit of GPS logging, which i'm looking for anyway. Interesting that there are concerns about it running on the Touch though - something to be wary of. I found an online review of CPL7 here that was run on a Touch and no issues were reported.

Having said this though, TTN6 is cheaper by about £15.

The new Garmin package is even cheaper, but i read on here somewhere that it's not transferable to another SD card, so it would mean me swapping cards everytime i wanted to use it - not very practical on the Touch.

Haven't looked at Route66 yet.

Decisions, decisions!!

Got CPL7 installed on my Touch yesterday and it runs just fine, closes itself down very neatly too (doesn't keep much/any RAM when it goes)

Scrolling is smooth, route calculation and re-calculation is fast, voices are clear and timely.

The only neutral/negative for me so far (only had it 24 hours so far) is that the voice is quiet, and when you turn it up it increases the master volume - would be nice to have it independently controlled. The speaker on the Touch isn't great either - at full volume Jane appears to have a lisp but is still perfectly understandable.

I installed to the phone but am going to rebuild (and Ghost) the phone this weekend, and will install to the SD card then. Hopefully that won't affect any of the above.

Thanks for this ChuckieEgg (would i be right in assuming you got your title from the 80's BBC Computer game? About the only game i've ever become profficient at!)

I'm pretty sure i'll go for CP7 now, despite the extra cost to TTN6.

Just one question - what difference does it make installing programmes on internal memory rather than the storage card? Up until now, i've always installed everything on the storage card.

I used to use my phone memory card in my camera, when I ran out of space there, so I still install lots to the phone itself.

Installing to the phone means that apps can run without the SD card and sometimes run a little faster, but in practice the Touch has limited internal space (I had 4Mb free after installing CPL7 to the phone) and comes with a hard-to-reach 1Gb microSD card (so you wont be taking it out that often anyway).

There are some things that NEED to be on the device, but in general I find everything else is better on the SD card

from the 80's BBC Computer game?

That's right, I'm surprised by the number of people that actually recognise it.
