Hi Guys,

I need some help please, i've just bought a T-Mobile Vario II and bought some dodgy WM6 upgrade ROM on ebay. The phone works but not as well as it should and i want to return to the original T-Mobile ROM.

Could someone please tell me where to download the ROM from.

Many many thanks for the anticipated help.

Welcome to the forum :( Shame you didn't pop along here before the visit to ebay ;)

You could try the free (!!!) official version discussed HERE if you want the T-Mobilified version, or there's an Orange version or maybe Google for one of the 'cooked' generic ROMs, which are, again, free.

Just out of interest, how much did this "saviour of all things unsavory" charge you for a, no doubt, cooked ROM?

I note this is your first post so will assume you have not seen other sites and do not know what is available out there - so here goes:

- the official T-Mobile ROM (link provided) now gives you an option to get back to a state with your device that should allow a warranty claim so it is worth saving a copy on your PC for use as required.

- The official T-Mobile WM6 ROM (the installation files that upgrades the device) appears not to be the best but of course that is personal preference. Certainly it will give you that whole WM6 look but there are faster and more capable ROMs out there that can be used too.

- These other ROMs are 'cooked' (created in a so called 'kitchen') to meet our increasing demands for perfection and ever more customised systems. They are created by people that really do know what they are doing and some of these 'cooked' ROMs are rivals to the official ROMs themselves - arguably far better than the Microsoft and vendor supplied ROMs.

- It's all a matter of what you want, how much risk you are willing to accept, your PC competence, and of course (you will find this) your willingness to read LOTS of posts in forums - especially the XDA Developers forum.

That's about it. If you want to see what is out there and try your hand at new ROMs then first select a trusted ROM based upon lots of good feedback. The ROM that you bought was almost certainly available for free - hence the earlier response to your post. There is a very useful WIKI worth reading here.

A few useful facts:

- There are 2 ROM areas of your device. The Main ROM where the Operating System (OS) goes and the Extended ROM. The Extended ROM is normally hidden and locked and often contains vendor configuration files run after the normal OS install (you will see something like "customising in 3/2/1 secs....).

- ROM upgrades can be either Radio or OS - the radio ROM updates your mobile phone part of your device only - often to the latest build that 'may' be better than the version you have.

- Cooked or vendor supplied ROM upgrades for an OS may also contain ROM data for the extended ROM and also possibly the radio too. You need to read the facts about the ROM.

- It is possible to unhide and unlock your extended ROM so it can be used to install programs or used for storage. It is also possible to completely unlock your device (for free) so that it is no longer tied to a particular company like T-Mobile - this will allow you to insert and use any SIM.

- Like any upgrade (ROM install) it is entirely possible to RUIN your new device that costs lots. You may even invalidate the warranty.

All you need is available as links from the XDA Developers Hermes Site (generic name for your handset).

READ THE ADVICE GIVEN ON THE WIKI AND THEN READ IT AGAIN BEFORE EMBARKING ON UPGRADES.

- Read the WIKI

- Back up your data

- Read about general upgrading here

- Install Hard SPL

- Read the WIKI

- Get your OS ROMs here - take a look at the Schaps 4 version.

- Get your radio ROMs from the area linked to within the WIKI and here.

- Read about completely unlocking your device here - but remember to re-apply the Hard-SPL at step 4 above afterwards.

Have fun - and enjoy all the reading. 6 months ago I knew little about this but with patience and lots of reading (before posting daft questions already covered for example) I have now changed my OS ROM 5 times and had at least 4 different radios on the device. You can see what I am currently on in my signature block below. Hopefully I have made no errors here (you will be told if I have :( ) and this is of use. These forums provide an excellent support means for many of us and providing you read first and use the search features to see if your question has been covered you will find lots of help from people with exactly the same device as you ;) .

Regards
