Lost chains/clusters on card

Hi all,

I found over the weekend that the messaging app wouldn't start on my vario III after working fine half an hour beforehand. Took a weekend of investigation and I found the card had 5 broken chains and *thousands* of lost clusters - with some of the affected files being the mail attachments on the storage card. I've deleted these and the mail app starts again.

Question is - is this easy to do, did I screw it up, or is this a fault in the card that I've come across as I fill it up with guff? It's a month or so old - sandisk 4gig.

connect the card to a pc using a usb reader, but not in the phone.

run the disk defragment program in windows and run it on the card.

might be better to just format it (outside the phone again)

How did you find out it had bad clusters/chains on it?

So is this a hardware fault on the card or an OS hiccup?
