Vario III freezing...

....and not just beacuse of the weather! I'm finding my Vario III freezing a couple of times a week - much less stable than my old Vario I - and as a result I've missed phone calls etc. A soft reset sorts it, but it surely shouldn't be happening. I have very few extras on the machine - Batti, eWallet, GPRS monitor, spb Time. I can't spot a pattern as to what causes a freeze. Anyone else having the same problem, or can suggest a solution?

Thanks.

Yes. It is going to be something you have done to it - as there are loads of V3 owners not having the same problem.

I would remove SPB Time and Ewallet and see if it is more reliable. Then after a few days add one back and see if it changes

Thanks for the speedy reply. I should also have mentioned Google Maps. I've just taken GPRS monitor off as I don't use it. The problems started before I loaded SPB Time so I doubt it's that. eWallet doesn't run unless you open it so it's also unlikely to be that. Thanks for the help - other thoughts gratefully accepted.

I'd go with a hard reset and add the apps you need over the course of a few days and see if reliability improves. My Kaiser seems very stable now. Not sure if it helps, but here's a list of what I've installed:

Viigo

CoPilot 6

Google Maps (latest build)

TCPMP

Yahoo! Go!

Skype

Windows Live!

PHM Regedit

Pocket RAR

Sprite Backup

Visual GPSCE

VxUtil

AvantGo

IPCheck Mobile

Even with all that lot on (which is way more than I've ever installed on a WinMo device before) it doesn't seem to have any problems.

As Hotphil says a hard reset will give you a "as new" device. That will prove that its not faulty and that it must have been a setting or app installed that caused the problem.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of a hard reset, uninstalling the apps is the only way to try to get it back to normal.

Ever since I installed Batti I had some screen refresh issues once in a while. Usually I could play with using some hardware buttons and I could blindly navigate for a while and kill Batti using the task manager. Once I had to use the reset hole. But, I don't think I'd give up having Batti just b/c of the slight instabilities once a week or so.

Sounds like uninstalling Batti would be a good place to start. I like it, but not enough to have it crash my machine twice a week. I'll report back as to how it goes.

Get shot of GPRS Monitor - I had exactly the same problems with my Vario II whilst using it. Got rid = no more freezes. I had similar problems with the M:Metrics application too. It seems anything which 'monitors' the data into/out of the device causes some sort of freezing issue.

Just my thoughts mind you, I've no empirical evidence to support my findings.

I've had no freezes for the last three days since removing Batti and GPRS monitor. Not long enough to prove anything yet, but suggestive at least. Of course, assuming it stays that way, I don't now know which of them was the culprit...

(I don't actually need GPRS monitor, but I did find Batti quite useful.)

I run batti on mine with no problems. I think that pd.ryder's post and your own experiences prove its GPRS MOnitor.

Well, after nearly a week with no freezes, I've reinstalled Batti (but not GPRS Monitor). After a couple of days, no freezes yet. So, yes, it does look very much like GPRS Monitor is the culprit. I'll report back in a few days to confirm.

I used GPRS Monitor for about 5 minutes on my old HTC Wizard. Made the thing unusable. Never bothered since. Glad to see I hadn't ;) was thinking of trying again with a new device and a year and a half on!

i had batti on mine before it went back and had problems with it - when i plugged it into usb to charge, batti would totally corrupt the screen and slowly lock the device up

I've now had one freeze since I reinstalled Batti - one more and it's off, permanently.

I've seen a few topics like this and "Batti" always seems to get a mention. I don't even know what Batti does, but it can't be worth this agro..

I've now had a second freeze, so it's goodbye Batti. I know that others don't seem to have a problem with it, and good luck to them! As someone else commented, it does seem prone to happen after I've charged the device.

Now I have to consider whether to load on Pocket Plus. I've used this in the past, and would probably only have to pay a modest upgrade charge for the WM6 version. The only thing is, I'm not sure I really need it on the Vario III other than for the battery status display.
