OMG ! It was all too easy !

With all the hype going around with the Ausu EEE PC I decided to dable with getting my laptop and kaiser connected.

I'm well chuffed as I can't believe how simple it was in the end...

On the phone : Enable network sharing (choose bluetooth PAN) put the phone back in your pocket.

On the laptop : Start bluetooth and thats it !

ubuntu bluetooth pan configured as follows.

[1] Bond the Kaiser with the laptop (plenty of howtos out there

[2] /etc/default# vi bluetooth

PAND_ENABLED=1

PAND_OPTIONS="--role PANU --connect [mac address of your kaiser]"

[3] Add bnep interfaces (even dhcp worked !)

/etc/default# vi /etc/network/interfaces

# Bluetooth pand

auto bnep0

iface bnep0 inet dhcp

[4] Start or restart bluetooth /etc/init.d/bluetooth

*** optional steps to autobind : see /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf and hcid.conf

Sweet a much simpler solution than trying to do this over PPP

Can you re-clarify this for me... Did you do this with an Asus EEE? Didn't think they had bluetooth (unfortunately) ;)

LOLz I did this in self pity due to the fact that I don't have an Asus EEE.

Would a BT USB dongle work?

(ICS over btpan is so simple with Vista on my Vaio)

Some speedtest results I ran yesterday...

Using good old GPRS

Using HSDPA

It may seem slow on HSDPA but remember my laptop uses the old bluetooth stack and hence is limited to around 700kbps.

Yup just get a decent bluetooth dongle. Anyone know what level of compliance the bluetooth device in the Kaiser adheres to ? : Answer it yourself why don't you : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_2.0

I did mean on the ASUS.

Yeh as Paul says just get a bluetooth dongle for the Asus but it would be advisable to ask Paul to find if Xandros has the following packages in their repositories before trying....

root@vaio:~# dpkg -l | grep blue

ii bluez-cups 3.7-1ubuntu4 Bluetooth printer driver for CUPS

ii bluez-pin 0.30-2.1ubuntu2 Bluetooth PIN helper with D-BUS support

ii bluez-utils 3.7-1ubuntu4 Bluetooth tools and daemons

ii libbluetooth2 3.7-1 Library to use the BlueZ Linux Bluetooth sta

bluez-utils is the main one needed. Once you install that your usb dongle 'should' be recognised.

Spent hours trying to sort this on my laptop, so that 2 of us can use my Kaiser HSPDA connection etc!

Can you point me to some setup information?

Many thanks,

Matthew

Just go to ICS on device. Select Bluetooth and click connect - answer yes to device turning on discoverable BT.

On vista laptop, go to Start, Connect TO, Then select the "set up a connection or network" link, scroll down to the bottom option (bluetooth PAN) and select it. It will find the Device by name, select it and click connect. Wait a few seconds for Vista to realise that its a web connection and then off you go.

Hi jimbouk,

Thanks for that - that bit works ok.

What I'll looking for is the ability to share my connection (via BTPAN) with my work colleague over either wifi or a wired LAN connection.

Is this possible?

Many thanks

Matthew

Usually yes. Right click on it, Properties, Sharing, "allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection"
