HTC Touch Dual review

Got my new HTC Touch Dual before the weekend and here's my review so far. Comments, answers to my gripes and questions are welcome.

It came in a really nice black HTC box with silver lettering and magnetic opening.

Inside it included a 1gb microSD card, data cable, nice holder and headphones.

The phone synched my contacts and calendar fine.

It seems a tad slow sometimes compared to my old C500 and C600 but we'll see.

The music player interface isn't great (compared to an iPod). It has a WM10 player and an Audio Player program that by default lists every song and not an Album, Artist menu screen. Also no album art unfortunately ;)

Again compared to the iPod and my Sony earphones the audio isn't amazing. Bass support isn't great but there is an equalizer and audio booster program in there to try out.

The camera seems better than the c600 when I tried it in bright light the picture came out great. But in low light it struggles with no flash as many do.

Support for Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents is pretty cool! Not sure how it fares transferring those files from the device to a different computer yet.

The touch screen is nice with a funky swipe interface laid on top of the Windows OS. Having your top 9 contacts in a touch picture grid is really nice and simple.

Touch recognition of written sentences is really cool!

The default Orange homescreen is pretty but not perfect or customisable. It should be changeable not not sure how yet. I'd prefer to change the icons to list my top programs, and display todays calendar appointments etc but we'll see. Any recommendations?

The phone is thicker than the HTC Touch but still thin, thinner than the TYTN II i believe.

Will have to get used to it but pretty happy so far.

After speaking to retention dept I got the handset upgrade for £50 and they reduced my monthly tarrif from £25 to £20.

So not too bad.

Is it HTC Audio Manager you have? If so, it should display by 'All Songs', Playlists' Artists', 'Album'. 'Genre' or 'Composer'

If you see 'All Songs' at at the top of your screen tap it to go up to the higher level menu.

What do you get for your £20/ month with Orange? I'm paying £20.51 with T-Mob for Flext35 (up to 900Mins or 1800 texts) and W'n'W Plus (3Gb FUP)

wtf?! I get 400mins anytime any network and 100 texts or more.

Am I being ripped off?

I only actually use about 150 minutes and 60 texts. it says i have 300 web mins but i dunno what that means?

Hi there

I got mine yesterday as well. I'm pretty pleased with the device overall but i have one major problem: I can't insert my microSD card. I'd be interested to hear if you had any difficulty fitting your storage card? I insert mine with the gold plated side up but it doesn't "lock" into place. I've tried pushing it in with quite a bit of force (and the device detects it) but it keeps being ejected back out....and the rubber flap doesn't hold it in place either.

Is there a special trick I'm missing?? I've tried with 2 different microSD cards - no luck!!

Not Friends and Family - that was 50%, I got the 25% off when they were offering it last year and you are right, I get an extra £15/ month off for not changing my handset so I'm not complaining about my deal :(

Mine arrives on Tuesday.

I'm wondering whether to get a screen protector.

My Magician has a groove from cue shots in Virtual Pool Mobile and I assume the screen gets dirtier when fingers are used more than the stylus. Even Smartphone screens get smeared and I imagine it could be a problem with this type of device. What do you think ?

Accessories for Touch Dual at Brando

Talking of the Magician, there are times when I like to have the device in a case and Brando's leather cases are superb. I'm hoping they'll come up with a design that allows the keypad to slide out.

Dont forget the Touch and Touch Dual screens are flush with the outer casing. A screen protector will be pretty noticable! If you haven't had a chance to play with either yet, the screen finish is similar to that of a Smartphone (C600 etc). Are you getting yours from O?

Yeah, I've still got 5 months left on my previous contract but this one is too good to wait for.

Lacking the patience to wait for replies to my own question :( , I've ordered one of each type of screen protector. I'll do a review when they get here. Alternatively I could pimp it with one of these :
