Free Maps for use with GoogleMaps?

Does anyone know if you can download free UK maps from anywhere that GoogleMaps would use on my Touch whilst tracking my position using an external GPS unit? I tried it once using the default maps downloaded live over the GPRS connection, but data charges soon mount up.
