Guest emyllis Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Well! I'm thinking exactly that. Should I get one for Chrsitmas? I'd appreciate your feedback please. Some questions please. 1) Can it run MS office/equivalent comfortably? 1)a) I am assuming you can run Win XP and it runs reasonably? 2) Is the screen resolution a big problem? 2)a) Especially if using it for a long time? 3) I assume it's easy to upgrade the RAM if necessary? 4) Can the internal memory (4 gig) be upgraded? 5) Does it have a "wow" factor? Cheers!
Guest Matthew Prince Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Well! I'm thinking exactly that. Should I get one for Chrsitmas? I'd appreciate your feedback please. Some questions please. 1) Can it run MS office/equivalent comfortably? I would imagine so yeah 1)a) I am assuming you can run Win XP and it runs reasonably? Awaiting the same answer 2) Is the screen resolution a big problem? Not at all , mine is mint 2)a) Especially if using it for a long time? No 3) I assume it's easy to upgrade the RAM if necessary? Awaiting the same answer too 4) Can the internal memory (4 gig) be upgraded? Awaiting the same answer , i hope so 5) Does it have a "wow" factor? DEFINITELY! , works just like a laptop without the size and battery hunger. Cheers!
Guest hxcobd Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 1) Can it run MS office/equivalent comfortably? Easily. I own a 4Gig with 2GB RAM, and it has replaced my desktop. I regularly run Winamp, Firefox, AIM, and a variety of other programs. Trust me, the CPU is a lot more spritely than you'd expect. 1)a) I am assuming you can run Win XP and it runs reasonably? I use Windows Fundamentals and it runs flawlessly. Boot time is around 30 seconds. 2) Is the screen resolution a big problem? I use an external monitor (19" HDTV) about 95% of the time, so I couldn't tell you. I'd guess that yeah, it would probably get a little annoying. The screen is incredibly clear, but 7", obviously isn't the best on the eyes. 2)a) Especially if using it for a long time? See above. 3) I assume it's easy to upgrade the RAM if necessary? Unscrew 2 screws, pop panel off, take out old chip, put in new one. Takes seriously less than a minute. And 2GB chips are only $40 on newegg! 4) Can the internal memory (4 gig) be upgraded? Nope. It's soldered onto the motherboard. 5) Does it have a "wow" factor? Obviously. People are always floored when they see how small it is, and on top of that, that it runs full-fledged Windows XP.
Guest Dr Who Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 Should I buy one of these or upgrade to TMob Ameo? I need something for emailing/web/light office when I am at clients offices. Would probably run nlited XP at a guess.
Guest Monolithix Posted December 8, 2007 Report Posted December 8, 2007 As long as you have wifi or don't mind hooking up a BT dongle/USB cable for internets...
Guest Dr Who Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 As long as you have wifi or don't mind hooking up a BT dongle/USB cable for internets... Should have said - I currently take my laptop with me and access the net over wifi, so would still do that even with the Ameo. However despite the laptop being 'ultraportable' 12" model it still annoys me carrying it everywhere, so it I could find something smaller and lighter that would be perfect. I will still use the laptop when I am based somewhere for a day but when I have to go to about 6 different places in a day something smaller would be much better. Would install XP on it so could always use the phone as a modem I guess. If I don't get the Ameo that leaves me the option of getting a Touch/Touch Plus or possibly even a Nokia N82 for a bit of a change.
Guest kadave Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 1) Can it run MS office/equivalent comfortably? Not sure, will test ms office 2007 in a few days. 1)a) I am assuming you can run Win XP and it runs reasonably? XP runs great! I upgraded my ram and am very satisfied with the performance. 2) Is the screen resolution a big problem? Screen Res. isn't a huge problem, but occassionally it can be annoying when viewing large webpages. 2)a) Especially if using it for a long time? I've surfed and worked on it for hours and not found it to be a problem. 3) I assume it's easy to upgrade the RAM if necessary? Upgrade to 1gb ddr2 was extremely easy and took me 3 minutes. 4) Can the internal memory (4 gig) be upgraded? Awaiting response. However, I would like to recommend using nLite for your XP installation. I got my XP install file down to 199Mb. I installed ALL windows updates (no idea why...guess i wanted to experiment with it) including IE 7 and WMP 10 and have 1.99 Gb free space on the original 4gb ssd. 5) Does it have a "wow" factor? I would have to say that I read about every forum and article (looked at all the pics and vids) about the Asus EEE prior to receiving mine in the mail. You cannot prepare yourself for the actual size of this tiny device. It STILL blew my mind. Most definitely a "wow" factor. Love it. :(
Guest Monolithix Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 On office 2k7, i've been using it for a while now and i'm tempted to go back to 2003. It runs fine, however the new ribbon toolbar structure takes up a lot of room. It isn't so bad in Word or Excel, however it makes Powerpoint almost unusable. Only reason i've stuck with it so long is because i hook my EEE up to my 19" TFT most of the time...
Guest Monolithix Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 A few screenshots to demonstrate :(
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 Shame you can't 'minimise' the ribbon... P
Guest Monolithix Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 Indeed, an autohide option would rock :(
Guest emyllis Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 Well I've got one and it's great! I've also got the "full" version of linux by doing the following: EEE PC: Open up a terminal buy pressing Ctrl+Alt+T Type "sudo bash" to gain root access (Be careful what you do with root access. The only reason we're using it now is so that you don't have to type sudo before each command. But you could easily mess up your machine if you perform every command as an administrator) Type "apt-get update" to make sure you have access to the most up to date packages Type "apt-get install kicker" and answer "y" when asked if you want to install Type "apt-get install ksmserver" and answer "y" when asked if you want to install Type exit to leave the root account Type exit to close your terminal window 2 minute job :(
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted December 14, 2007 Report Posted December 14, 2007 I prefer the easy interface I think :( P
