Guest chucky.egg Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Anyone care to suggest a UK-based (ideally) company offering affordable Exchange hosting without enforcing a security policy? I'm with 1&1 at the moment (£6/month I think) which is .... OK. At best. I've had some connection issues recently, and their Tech Support is awful. I've also just established that the PIN on my device is part of the problem I have with screen delay. So, recommendations or "avoid these clowns at all costs" would be much appreciated
Guest wills Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 It's not uk based but I use www.sherweb.com my my hosted exchange. With it you get 3gb email space and a 100 mb sharepoint site....and all for $8.95 per month.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 I use Sherweb too, brilliant! P
Guest Neil5459 Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 I've stuck with 4Smartphone.net despite the recent price increase to $11 per month, and reduction of mailbox size to 500MB. Does offer Exchange 2007 though, so full HTML email and searchable mail folders on the mobile client. Also offers a free PC version of OL2007.
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Thanks for the responses I've just (literally, just finished) moved to Sherweb Outlook 2007, Exchange 2007, SharePoint (when i get around to it), and WM6. Nice combination. Whoo hoo! Flagging messages and OOA on my device!
Guest tasman Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) Welcome to the club. After around 6 months, I'm still trying to think what to do with the sharepoint :) Although saying that, today I completed migrating all my Outlook messages to gMail. After all they've given me 6gb of space, it would be rude not to try and use it all. Edited January 27, 2008 by tasman
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Why? :) No more push mail for you :D P
Guest J273 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 How does the push mail work from shareweb?
Guest tasman Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Why? :) No more push mail for you :D P No, plenty of push mail, still on Sherweb, good for mail on the move, but gMail has the edge of space for a mail "archive" :D
Guest tasman Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 How does the push mail work from shareweb? Sherweb is a Hosted Exchange provider, they have the Exchange servers like your web host has the web servers. Sign up for an account and then configure your WM6 devices ActiveSync to connect to the Exchange server and activate DirectPush on the device to check for messages. The DirectPush facility "pings" (sort of) the Exchange server to check for new messages if it gets a suitabel response, ActiveSync downloads the message (or part of depending on your message settings).
Guest J273 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 So do i need my computer on at home for it to actually puch the mail to my phone.
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 No, it doesn't go through your PC (although you can also connect Outlook to it if you want to) Your device talks directly to the Exchange server over the interweb
Guest J273 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Ok,thanks.......I might sign up for this....I thought you needed activesync on your pc running all the time....which seemed a little pointless to me. Im sure i used a app ages ago where you needed activesync on your PC running for it to actually push anything. Thanks
Guest StuBFrost Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 Sorry for barging in but as you are recommending Sherweb..... Is it possible to use my gmail email address with Sherweb as my reply name so it looks like mail has come from that address ? Thanks Stuart
Guest Loconinja Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 I currently use IMAP from my regular ISP. I have my Vario III set to check my mailbox every 5 minutes, so I am notified of e-mails very quickly. I've considered moving to a hosted exchange service, but I'm wondering if it is really worth it. What would I gain?
Guest jimbouk Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 Ok,thanks.......I might sign up for this....I thought you needed activesync on your pc running all the time....which seemed a little pointless to me. Im sure i used a app ages ago where you needed activesync on your PC running for it to actually push anything. Thanks There are various mail solutions around that use your pc's outlook to collect your mail so that it can be pushed to your device. Its not as good as directpush/exchnage server. I use 4smartphone - as the exchange rate is ok at the moment and I am pleased with their service. If the dollar got a lot stronger I might consider moving. For the poster above - imap and 5 minute polling is fine - the only thing you are missing is GAL/OOO etc
Guest StuBFrost Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 Sorry for barging in but as you are recommending Sherweb..... Is it possible to use my gmail email address with Sherweb as my reply name so it looks like mail has come from that address ? Thanks Stuart Nobody can answer my question ?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 Not that I can see, probably worth mailing sherweb to ask tho? P
Guest deadphill Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 I use mail2web. It does provide a free exchange web account and I have pushed this up to their premium service which I think costs me about a £1.50 a month. It was £1 a month but then they had to up their costs slightly. I think I get around a couple of gig storage and owa but as yet I have not managed to connect outlook to it. I have never really looked into this though. Phill
