Anyone here have a 2G Surf?

Most of the discussions here seem to be about the 4G and 8G models. I wasn't sure how much I would use the Eee so I opted to go with the cheapest 2G Surf model. It is supposed to get here tomorrow(was hoping it would arrive Christmas eve but no dice).

Has anyone tried putting XP or eeeXubuntu on the 2G model? I know you can get XP pretty small with nlite.

That's going to be seriously tight, but it might JUST fit... I'm not sure how big an uber nlited base XP image is. Only one way to find out :(

A quick experiment with nlite I was able to get the iso down to 274M and once installed(on a 2G hd partition) XP took up 472M. I didn't install SP2 or any updates yet but shoving Word and Excel on there bumped it up to about 650M. So, I am guessing once SP2 and patches/updates are done it will be around 1G which would leave about a gig of space left for a few other programs that I use(ie. Firefox, mIRC and SecureCRT) and storage of docs, etc. I have some SD cards that I can use for additional storage if needed and an upgrade to 2G of RAM to help with XP performance is less than $30 after rebate. I even have a USB 2.0 IDE enclosure that I can use for a DVD/CD burner or an external HD. I have an old 40G drive I can toss in there. I'll post the results here if I decide to go with something other than the default Xandros OS.

Finally got my 2G Surf(a day late despite paying for next day shipping). Newegg was kind enough to give me a partial refund on the shipping. I am actually quite pleased with the default OS(at least for the time being). I may order another one to play around with XP on and give it to the wife. She seemed to really like the Eee and talked about how cool it would be to have a pink one.

You cannot upgrade the RAM on a 2G surf because it's soldered on the motherboard.

And did you mannage to instal and run Xp on your 2G surf? What have you get rid of from the original xp cd? What have you keep?

Really? No RAM slot on a 2G Surf? What's under the door on the base? :(

That sucks :(

Yeah, no door on the 2G surf and RAM is soldered to the MB, however with the default 512M it doesn't seem to be lacking in performance. I bought the wife a white 4G surf, no door but you can take the thing apart if you want to upgrade the RAM. It is running an nLited version of XP SP2 atm and is quite peppy with the std 512M of RAM. At this point I have no desire to upgrade the RAM and the SSD still has 2G of space left after updates and installing Word/Excel/Firefox and other programs I normally use. If/when that fills up I'll pick up another 8G SDHC card.

You'd have thought they would have embedded it all to save on cost. Strange how its still not that much cheaper than the 4G!

Yeah, for only 50$ more you get the 4G they would had been better to decrease the 2G at 250$ instead of 300$
