Guest K Woodhead Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 When installing new programs, what criteria do you use to determine if it should be installed on the device or the SD card? I realize that programs like TomTom w/maps should be installed on the SD card, but for other apps like Sprite backup, Spb software, S-K tools, etc, what is the "best practice?" Sorry if this has been covered earlier..... I did searches and couldn't come up with anything.
Guest Neil5459 Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 Don't be afraid of asking :( Sometimes teh info is there, but may be hard to retrieve. This is a common question for new users, and the answer tends to be to try and install as much as you can to the Storage card, to save main memory for the stuff that has to reside there. In general, anything that runs at startup, or as a Today screen plug-in must run from Main memory. During the startup process after a soft reset, the storage card may not have initialised by the time the files are requested, which leads to loading errors, or worse, corrupted Storage Cards. I'd also include anything that you may need to run if your storage card become inaccessible- so therefore SK Tools, and Backup programs are best insalled to Main Memory. With TomTom, the installer puts the main files into main memory regardless of where you select them to be, and maps of course are on the Stoarge Card. You can simply move the TomTom and Program Files/Navigator folders from Main Memory to the Storage card to save 5MB, though you will have to remake the Programs shortcut.
Guest Alkali Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 When installing new programs, what criteria do you use to determine if it should be installed on the device or the SD card? I really do not worry myself over that.Try to install as many a program on the sd card because in special circumstances the program sometimes ask to be installed in the main memory, then and only then do i install there.
Guest K Woodhead Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Thank you for your responses. It looks like I'll be doing a cold reset and a re-load here shortly if I can't resolve an intermittent issue that has developed. My screen becomes unresponsive, but the keyboard still works. I'll post a new thread for that one.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 I install everything that runs at startup or I deem 'system critical' to Main Memory, everything else to Storage Card. P
