Guest Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 Festive greetings and happy new year! :( Can anyone advise on how I can get Skype on an e650 to use wifi to connect to the internet? I've installed the latest WM version of SKype and it starts up okay, requests a username and password but always fails when it tries to connect. It says there's isn't a valid internet connection. My wifi connection is solid - it works for Google Maps, PIE, etc so no problem there... Any suggestions - am I missing a registry tweak or something? Alternatively I've read alot about fring - is that a useful IM and VoIP alternative to Skype on my mobile? Am I right in thinking it supports Skype, AIM and Yahoo messengers? Thanks in advance.
Guest Looby Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 Have you got it set to WiFi in Skype settings? Also is your PC security blocking it? :(
Guest Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Have you got it set to WiFi in Skype settings? Also is your PC security blocking it? :D Yes I have...although I was only given the option to set the internet access source at installation. After that all I'm offered is the option to register or quit :( I've set my router - which is how my e650 accesses wifi - to access the device without restriction. As I said just about any other wifif connected app works fine Most frustrating <_<
Guest Looby Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 If you launch Skype and login haven't you got menu \settings\connections? :(
Guest ombre33 Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 (edited) *snip* Alternatively I've read alot about fring - is that a useful IM and VoIP alternative to Skype on my mobile? Am I right in thinking it supports Skype, AIM and Yahoo messengers? I must say i prefer fring. for the simple fact that it enables u to actually use a bluetooth headset so not everyone else around is able to listen to ur call. Without headset, fring will (just as skype) put everything through to the main speaker in the back of wm5/6 devices (obviously a wm thing, not skype/frings/whoevers fault). which is horrible for obvious reasons and it creates *great* feedback noises... .-ombre-. edit:it not only supports skype, but also icq, sip, googletalk and msn. no aim and yahoo tho.. Thanks Ombre33...just a couple of things though: does fring still support the basic messaging features on Skype and others as well as VoIP? Also I noticed on the fring web site they suggest that they do support AIM and Yahoo - fring web site

Also I noticed on the fring web site they suggest that they do support AIM and Yahoo - fring web site yes, you can do "regular" im-ing via skype. I know it says aim and yahoo are supported on their website, but in the client itself you cant add user info for these services. maybe this is only possible with clients for other platforms (as in Fring v3.24.16 for Symbian vs. Fring v3.20.21.96 for WM devices). i guess itll become available with one of, if not the next available version of fring for wm devices. .-ombre-. Guest modgnik Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 Sorry Looby I haven't been very clear - I can't actually login into Skype because it won't see/use my wifi connection. Try this it may work. Take out your sim. (no gprs) Boot up your phone. (don't connect WiFi) Click on the Skype icon. Enter your sign in details and sign in. You should get a Connection Method page where you are prompted to select a prefered connection method. ie WiFi only or WiFi & 3G. At least you will find out what your current Skype setting is.

It was quite funny (!) really - when I dind't have wifi enabled Skype told me wifi wasn't switched on before telling me it couldn't find an internet connection. When I switched on wifi, Skype jumped straight to telling me that I didn't have a valid internet connection :( Oh well I think I'll lean towards fring....it couldn't be much worse than what I have already (shrug). Thanks for you advice though - made sure I wasn't going mad!
Guest modgnik Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 Thanks for you advice though - made sure I wasn't going mad! You could try one other thing to see if you can at least login to Skype. With your sim in and WiFi disabled, get to the Connection Method page and change Connection to WiFi & 3G. I did this on my SP5 (WiFi & Edge) and it logged into Skype ok. Not that's it's of any real use with Edge. See what happens with your device? Ps. I picked up a PAYG 3Skypephone recently and in all honesty it knocks spots off the Skype client in my WM 5/6 Smartphones. The really big bonus is the non-necessity of WiFi and data free Skype calls, home and roaming abroad.* * 3UK sister networks only. If mobile Skype is important to you then this could be an additional arrow to your quiver.

I only really wanted Skype for the IM feature. There aren't enough hotspots or other friends using Skype to make it worthwhile for anything else. ...and fring does appear to offer skype with "all" my other IM requirements too which makes the additional effort just about worth it. Fring does appear to connect btw. I'm guessing that there some minor problem with my installation rather than anything wrong with Skype. :(
