Guest Meerkats Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Hi Guys I wanted to know what GPS app is the best (and easist to install :D )? and which GPS device/reciver is the most compatible? Regards Kim Hi Kim, Last week I bought the Touch Bluetooth GPS Reciever (£34.95) from mobilefun.co.uk, it's spot on! It's quick to lock onto the satellites and is of a nice size too! I'm using it with Destinator 7 software which is nice and easy to use. I've also used the TomTom software which is also good but I have found that it doesn't have maps for the Isle of Man where as the Destinator 7 does. (That's if you ever need to go there! :( ). The only small problem I've found with using various gps applications is the need for a "virtual cursor" as the S710 doesn't have a touchscreen. I'm using shareware SPHelper at the moment. I've tried an version of fakecursor but have found SPHelper to be quicker. I hope that this is of help. Regards, Stu
Guest prajith Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I have tried Holux M-1000B from semsons and it is really very good. gets a fix very fast.
Guest eyeofra Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 I have been looking around the net, to find a program that will be perfect for my vox. what version of the programs (tomtom, route 66, destinator) do i need. will a pocket pc app work (with fakecursor) or do I need a special version for the vox?
Guest Confucious Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Hi Kim, you don't say where you are but for the UK CoPilot 7 is well worth a look and it works on both PPCs and SmartPhones. As for BT receivers - a cheap one of eBay should do the trick.
Guest snappysnaps Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 So Copilot 7 is a good choice? I currently have an old tomtom version 5.2 installed but maps are well out of date. I dont think tomtom are making software anymore for smartphones?
Guest matrix77 Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 I have iBlue 737 reciver with MTK chipset and it works well, I am useing it with "Garmin Mobile XT" for Windows Mobile, and "Efficasoft GPS Utilities"
Guest Confucious Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 CoPilot 7 is generally reckoned to be the best available at the moment but I've not heard a lot about Garmin XT - the other one worth considering is iGo.
Guest Rolandhurt01 Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 I have orderd the Carcomm Blutooth Credit Card GPS Reciver off eXpansys and was wondering if the Smartphone version of Microsoft AutoRoute would work for desplaying routes that I have created using AutoRoute 2008 on my Laptop? Roland
Guest Confucious Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Smartphone version of Microsoft AutoRoute ? Autoroute can export maps to your SmartPhone but AFAIK there is no version for the SmartPhone - am I wrong?
Guest Rolandhurt01 Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Smartphone version of Microsoft AutoRoute ? Autoroute can export maps to your SmartPhone but AFAIK there is no version for the SmartPhone - am I wrong? When I said Smartphone version of AutoRoute I ment the Smartphone version of Microsoft Pocket Streets. Is Pocket Streets as good as using something like CoPilot Live or Route66 or are they a better choice. I know that I can use Windows Live Maps or Google Mobile Maps, but using GPRS to download the maps seems an expensive way to do Sat Nav and seems to be a quick way to drain the phone battery. Roland
Guest Confucious Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Pocket Streets is a map which you can download to your phone. CoPilot and Route 66 are full GPS routing which will calculate your route on the fly - but I wouldn't recommend Route 66! If you want full GPS routing the best are CoPilot 7, iGo and TomTom with CoPilot 7 having leapfrogged the others and currently the best for most people.
Guest Rolandhurt01 Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Are there any free GPS routing applications as CoPilot 7, iGo and TomTom are a little expensive for what I need? Roland
Guest Confucious Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 No.Google maps does basic routing and is free if you have unlimited data but otherwise you pay forwhat you get.
Guest Rolandhurt01 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 No.Google maps does basic routing and is free if you have unlimited data but otherwise you pay forwhat you get. I have got unlimited data that is capped at £1 a day but I'm having trouble getting google maps to lock on to any satellites for some reason. I have set up my reciver as the manual says and have even used the microsoft GPS utility that I downloaded from another post on here but nothing, GPS Utilities and PocketStreets does not even get a fix. Roland
Guest Confucious Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 It can take a few minutes to get the first fix - make sure you are outside and away from tall buildings the first time you use it.
Guest Rolandhurt01 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Once I have got my GPS reciver has got a first fix will it then lock on to the satellites virtually streight away or will it need to take time to get a fix? Roland
Guest snappysnaps Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 I have igo but i cannot get it to work on my windows mobile 6 smartphone. It worked great on WM5. TomTom 5.2 works great, maps i have are all the 660.1223 maps, Ok, but a little outdated. If some of the newer maps would work with TT5.2 i would be a happy chappy! I got a cheap bluetooth reciever off ebay from hong kong for about 20e and its brilliant. Uses a nokia battery, chargers with the same charger as my S710. It even picks up satellites in the house. How this locks onto satellites in the house ill never know, but it does. It also works when in a pocket or bag.
