Guest DavGerm4 Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Ok, I've seen a lot of UMPC's and I like this one, because it's cheaper, and there are a lot of mods/hacks that you can do (and I mod a lot of stuff). Anyways, I'm hearing that the 2G model can't have the RAM Upgraded at all? Is this true? I don't really care for a webcam (I could care less), so I was thinking about the 4G Surf. I was just going to do the mods to add more RAM, and stuff like that. Is the 4G able to upgrade the RAM, and if so, how much can u upgrade the RAM to? Is 2GB the highest? I know Linux, but I have XP, but does it run well on the Eee PC? Sorry I don't know much about the Eee PC. What about watching videos on it, does that work well? Thanks

Thanks The 2G has the RAM soldered to the motherboard and there is no upgrade socket. The 4G surf and non-surf can take up to 2G of RAM however from what I hear only the black ones have a door over the RAM socket. The white ones have to be completely disassembled to uprade the RAM. Also the default Xandros install will only recognize 1G of RAM unless you recompile a custom kernel for it. XP will recognize the 2G as will other unix installs. XP SP2 that is stripped down using nLite runs well on the 4G model(I have both a 2G,black and 4G surf, white). Video works well on both once the correct css/codecs have been provided. Just make sure to turn off system restore and turn off the page file if you install XP.
Guest hippotech Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 The white ones have a door held on with two screws to update the ram - no disassembly required !! Hippo
Guest EdinKali Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 The white ones have a door held on with two screws to update the ram - no disassembly required !! Hippo Is your white 4G a surf or non-surf? My recently purchased white 4G surf has no door on the bottom.
