Aparently, if you are in good standing on your account for 90 days or more you can call ATT and ask them for it. Most I have read who called to get the code told ATT they were travelling outside the US and wanted to use the phone with a foreign SIM. Some I have read just asked and got it.

The email you will get with your unlock code has instructions for the i607 (BJI), which don't exactly work for the i617 (BJII). If you take the SIM out, as instructed, you will (I got) an error about a SIM error occurring. Funny, I thought, as the SIM is decidedly not part of this process. Wanting to try it with the SIM in, but not wanting to waste my five attempts, I called AT&T who had me get a new phone. (A good thing, too, as I switched from black to red). Still getting the same error, they passed me to Samsung tech, who were also confused. Finally they had me try it with the SIM IN, and it worked just fine, getting some sort of confirmation that they network, or whatever was unlocked.

Awesome you helped me unlock my BJ2!!

I had that same problem, got the unlock code from AT&T, but failed 3 attempts of unlocking with the SIM card out. I bought it off ebay and was wondering if that had something to do with it. Didn't work with Tmobile SIM so I know it wasn't unlocked yet. Didn't dare try again but annoyed b/c I wanted to unlock for future flexibility, and now with the SIM card inside, it successfully unlocked!!

Thanks a bunch and I recommend this be added to the FAQ or list of tips. :)

I believe you also are supposed to have a foreign calling plan (which I have) to qualify. In any case, when you call and ask for the unlock code, they will verify your status and tell you if you qualify to get a code or not. Also, evidently it works with multiple phones that don't need to be bought from AT&T. I unlocked my blackjack 1 that I bought from AT&T prior to selling it on ebay, and then also unlocked an ebay bought BJ2 a week later.

Just remember to try it with the SIM card in. :)

I just called AT&T and was able to get an unlock code over phone - however the lady did not give me any instructions. Can some one post the instructions they received for unlocking i617.

Thanks.

Put in different SIM card and switch it on, it will prompt you for the code.

That's it.
