I have a 8Gb class 4 SDHC card and the write speed is very slow.

I partitioned the card while I was playing around with Ubuntu on my eee and it now seems even slower - I'm back with XP BTW.

Anyone noticed this or have any ideas what I can do to speed it up a bit.

Thanks

If I am not mistaken, class 4 write speed is only 4MB/sec. You'll want to pick up a class 6 SDHC card if you want faster write speeds.

You are correct, but I don't think I'm even getting that.....

Hmm, what is the card formatted as at the moment? NTFS or FAT?

Hi - it is formatted as FAT32 at the moment. It didn't seem to have any other option.

It's purely anecdotal, I haven't performed any specific tests, just doesn't seem to cut it.

I have temporary internet files on there for example and websites take an age to load. If I move this data back to SSD then it is as fast as my desktop.

Well, FAT32 should be faster than NTFS on volumes of 8G or less. I would run some timed write tests with a specified set of files and see what speeds you are getting.

Yo hippotech, I found the info below on the eeeuser forum. You may want to check your bios settings.

"I noticed when I set BIOS to OS Installed = Start then HDTune reports about 1MB/s flat. But, when switched to OS Installed = Finished then HDTune reports about 16-25MB/s on the same card."

Tried this and mine is also showing 16Mb/s - seems my speed issues are just in my head..... :)

On my travels though I found that setting the OS Installed to start changes the USB to 1.1. When on finished, USB 2 is restored.

The idea, apparently, is to use the lowest common denominator for installation.
