Guest Monolithix Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 One of the more interesting devices to come out of CES this year is Celio Corp's Redfly Mobile Companion. This UMPC-sized device brings an 8" display and a full keyboard and touchpad to your Windows Mobile handset. Connecting via Bluetooth or USB the Redfly mirrors your device's display on its 800x480 pixel screen (which seems to scale the device resolution correctly too!), without having any on-board processing power or OS of its own. All well and good, but it does bear a striking resemblence to the failed Foleo device from Palm last year. Also at a price point rumoured to be at $499, it steps right into competition from Asus's wildly popular EEE PC micro-laptop. On the other hand the Redfly does enhance your WinMo device capabilities, apparently enabling USB memory stick access via the USB ports and providing a VGA port in order to give presentations. The 8 hour battery life is also likely to outlast most WinMo devices when connected via Bluetooth! Personally i'd be interested in trying this out as an alternative to my EEE, and if you really don't need a "full" OS (Linux or Windows) then it could be a useful alternative if you're a WinMo power user! Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 I really like the idea, but not the price :) P
Guest Monolithix Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 Indeed, for £150...I'd be very interested, but anything over £200 and i'm happy with my EEE :)
Guest jimbouk Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 So why doesnt someone write an app to allow the eee to do the same...?
Guest Monolithix Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 Already thought about hunting down a vnc server for WinMo! VNC+EEE=Redfly?
Guest xorangefirex Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 Great idea, but the price is absolutely outlandish.
Guest thecresta Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 Looks interesting, but for the price it's a pretty much pointless. Would be a bit like buying a 15" monitor to plug my portable 3" analogue TV into, when I could buy a 20" TV with Freeview for the same price. :) Windows Mobile ?? :D
