Where is the BJII's built-in GPStest program located? I cannot find it anywhere under the \Windows directory on the phone. I browsed the phone through my PC with hidden/system files shown and no dice....

Download the attachment to this post:

Then extract the zip, and put the extracted file into your /windows/start menu folder. Now press start and launch GPS Test.

GPStest.exe won't show up under Activesync/Explorer (even with show hidden files/protected system files) and I don't know why. Do you?

It will be visible with Total Commander on the phone though.

Hmm...it should show up, but I can't verify this since I use Linux and can't access outside of my storage card when connected at the moment. I'll have to get back on windows sometime and let you know....

You've got the wrong GPS test. There's one already in your phone and all it needs is the shortcut pasted into the "Start Menu" folder. If you look further above in the thread "thelostsoul" has singled the thread out and you can download the link to the shortcut. Just unzip the file and place on device...simple.

The GPStest your trying to install sounds like the chartcross GPStest application which for me only ran with the com port 4 hack I no longer use. In fact with Garmin XT I dont need any hacks at all (thanks to thelostsoul for pointing out he didnt use anything..I have now gone this way also). I dont even have the GPSID GUI installed. In fact the GPSID GUI doesnt seem to make any difference at all to the baud rate settings I choose when using Garmin..it still has a half second delay update when the map is tracking..even set at 115200....makes no change from 300 baud, 9200 etc etc etc...

Same update speed. Wonder if an overclok of device would fix this? Tom Tom was like watching TV on my 8525...smooth as glass. Different devices I guess...more like my N70 with Tom Tom..had an update to map delay as well.

I've decided to purchase the Garmin XT from reading on this forum. So I don't need hacks whatsoever to make it work?

It isn't a cab....read further up. You copy and paste the file into the start menu folder..then it shows up as an application shortcut. The Q9 may not in fact have gpstest on board but it won't hurt to try. Either it works or it doesn't. Gpstest is already on the bjII but it's a hidden file..that's why it's a shortcut being placed into the start menu folder...and not an application. You can download the cab from an earlier post above to try it out.

Some i617s evidently have GPS not working with 3rd party software out of the box, but mine and many others, do work right out of the box. If this is the case for you, you don't need any hacks.

Check out this thread below to see how to transfer the data onto a bigger MicroSD card than the 2GB one supplied and get it to work.

I just want to know if we can manipulate GPS test in anyway. Is there entries in the device anywhere that point to baud rate...update....scanning speed!!

What are the default settings for the intermediate driver...(without installing the GUID). The intermediate driver is installed by default but we have no control over it....how does it get it's baud rate if it's standard. There must be a registry tweak somewhere...for both apps. They cant just run without getting settings somehow....it must be written. I have previously used the GPSID .cab and it killed a few things for me and I dont need it anyway as I use the GPStest app....but considering Garmin gets it's connection from the intermediate driver I wonder how the baud rate is controlled. I notice the update speed in GPStest is about every half second...can we manipulate this ??? It must be written in the app somewhere...

Sed8ed...thanks for the reply on another post!

I just wanted to say that I purchased my BJII last week. I had to pay full price($400) :D because I'm on the GoPhone Pick Your Plan. I'm also very new to modding phones! Needless to say I've been excited about all the modding possibilities this forum has to offer! However, I'm also very cautious about what mods I want to do and what aren't needed. This is also based on my experience level with modding. But I am no fool! Ok, I'll get to the point....

The only "mods" I have made to my phone are; the "3" app-unlock hacks(SDA, secpolicies, and SurrealNetworks App). I have made just a few others such as the start video, sms sent notification, mp3 size limit, and IE home page mods!

As far as the gps side of things, the "only" things I have done are download the GPSTest link(BJII internal) and Gmaps. The "total" time it took from starting GPSTest, finding "5" sats to GMaps finding my current location took less than "2" minutes tops!! Without any other gps hacks! And I've never had to "Hard reset" my phone...ever!! :D

Just thought I would shed some light for those like myself that have little experience with phone modding. Works flawlessly! I love my phone! Just wish it wouldda came with voice rec and wi-fi! :)

Yep, this is how it is - it does not start the GPS upon start of the app. Now press "Menu" and "Start" :D

You should see "Starting..." on top line. Now have it placed on a window/porch for a minute or so. It may help to go to "Options" and set "Start Type" = "Cold" This will reinitialize satelite table (may be slower, but it is better for the first attempt).
