Logmein Hamachi - What is it?

Not sure if anyone can help but I recently came across Logmein which I,ve been playing around with ever since. I then noticed Logmein Hamachi and have been trying to figure out exactly what it is.

Now I,ve found alot of info; about VPN,s, tunneling etc. I have no idea what that means or what you're able to do with the free or even premium system. Anyone care to try to explain?
