Guest highroyds Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Hope someone can help on this, I've posted quite a few places, but guess no one knows the solution on those forums as no one replied lol, just hoping someone does here. I've got myself an WD Passport 160GB and would like to install XP. Now I have already installed XP on another Ex. HD which took some doing, after a lot of hard work and help from others (as I had this problem before and I dont know how XP got installed last time, even though I've followed all the instructions to the letter). But I've come to a point that I can't understand. When I go to install XP, I set the BIOS to show the SSD as not installed and then reboot with the USB HD and DVD plugged in. The XP boots up and goes through the whole process as normal of installing XP, but when the EEE comes to boot up the very first time the loading bar comes up as normal but thats where it stops. Then it states: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the orignal Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. Now I've followed all different fixes for this but none of them work, mainly because theres no system restore point as this is the first time I've booted into windows xp. I've even tried to clone the first HD that has XP installed and working, but that didnt work, just showed a BSOD with 0x0000007b which states something about either virus or hardware. I would be grateful if someone could help me on this. Cheers
Guest EdinKali Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) Some folks(not all) are having trouble with the 100+ GB WD passports on the eee's. See this thread for more info: WD + eee issues Also, is this XP with SP2? I had some issues when trying to install an early version of XP without the service packs. See this thread for more info: WD + eee issues Also, is this XP with SP2? I had some issues when trying to install an early version of XP without the service packs. I've always used XP with SP2 as SP1 doesnt install. Cheers for that link, I have read that one. I'll try with a totally different hard drive tonight and see what happens. Just the one that I installed XP onto the first time, was doing the same thing and thats by the same company Western Digital but it was an external HD that I put together with a 2.5" case.
Guest highroyds Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 Found out what the problem is, its the Western Digital Drives. Some people maybe able to get it to work, but I've only been able to install once, but on the other External drive (Samsung & Seagate) it worked first time.

My co-worker just got a WD external for his eee and tried installing XP on it. No dice in his case either. I'll pass this info on to him.
