Want 'grown up' version of iphone!!

Hi

I currently have a SPV E650 which I think is great but the screen size is a bit limited when on the internet and for watching videos.

My daughter has an iphone which I love but I am not sure if I will be 'satisfied' with it having been used to a Windows Mobile device (limited options for adding applications - I think), also they are still a bit pricey.

I have just noticed the HTC Touch and wondered how this really compares with the iphone (and does it have wifi?)? I love the way the touch screen seems to work on this (with the 'fat finger' thing!) and the iphone. And, the 'you tube' on the iphone is great (although I am sure this is not exclusive to an iphone).

Or, is there something else that could be recommended which is similar to an iphone?

My wants are: Touch screen preferred with a large screen (although don't want a huge bulky PDA). Must have wifi, camera, video viewer (but not so bothered about recording). If I could edit word (and/or office files) files, that would be great and I need to be able to check my email (POP3). Don't mind if there is only an onscreen keypad. Oh, and it has to be able to make calls!!!! LOL!!

I like my gadgets to be full of toys to play with!! LOL! And, very 'customisable'.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Lynda

I have just noticed the HTC Touch

Hi Lynda

I read a review of the touch recently and they were not overly impressed with the touch screen, saying that it's basically a launcher for the applications below and that you'll need to use the stylus.

Maybe have a look at trustedreviews.com, that's where I got the review for the E650 / S710 and they sold me!

The iPhone is great though, at what it does do anyway. Apple do the interaction, presentation and intuition like nobody else. They just sometimes don't do the whole feature list that users might want.

Hope you find something good and if you do, let me know!

:)

I concur that while the iPhone is sexy, under the bonnet it is a bit of let down.

There are lots of things that you can add to smartphones to make them much more usable with the touch screen. Like Tengo Thumb application, or SBP Fullscreen keyboard. Im sure at some stage of editing word/excel docs you will want a bluetooth keyboard or a hardware keyboard attached.

Personally I have the TyTN II ... which is a great all round device. But yes, I love the look of the upcoming Touch Cruise.

Thanks for the replies.

According to their website, the Touch has wifi but the Touch Dual doesn't. Is this right? (Seems a bit strange!!). Also, is the only other difference between these two the addition of the keyboard in the Dual? I find the sliding keyboard of my E650 make it rather bulky compared to some of the 'slim' phones available.

I think the TyTN II is a bit too similar to my E650.

The cruise looks a great machine but not sure if I really like the 'look' of it (probably a woman thing!!)

Thanks again

Lynda

The Touch Cruise would be your ideal device I think, especially if you don't mind having an O2 contract! O2 have modified the somewhat angular HTC casing, to be the same as their existing Orbit.

The screen is the flush 'Touch' version, and it has 3G, WiFi, 256/128 RAM/ROM and GPS plus a 400MHz processor. No hardware keyboard but the current HTC Touchpad is excellent.

The Touch dual is great is you want a hardware keyboard, or the Touch Plus if you want the added memory and WiFi but no hard keyboard.

Lynda,

I know how you feel. I'm trying to replace my Palm Tungsten T5 & Motorola Razr with one unit that will sync with my desktop, allow editing of documents, surf the web, e-mail, GPS, ...

I think there are a number of options out there for you. It seems like HTC and e-Ten have the most to offer; but, I'm concerned with their reliability. Check out the forums on Expansys to see what I'm referring to. You might want to consider something from MWg; but, again I'm a little concerned. They are a recent spin-off from O2 and I think they're still getting the 'new' company settled. Further, I remember reading somewhere that HTC used to manufacture their units which again leaves questions about reliability. That being said, if you were to look for comments on these devices at Expansys you'd find that they appear to have fewer negative posts. I've read early postings that both Motorola and Samsung will be introducing units this month at the mobile phone (?) exposition in Spain. I also saw today that Garmin is entering the market as well with the nuvifone. Based on the size of the unit & the screen size, I think this is the best option I've seen so far. I'm just waiting for some more details to come out.

Happy PDA Hunting!

OK, I use an HP iPAQ HW6915; this is a WM5 PPC, integrated phone (with GPRS & EDGE), WiFi, BT, AGPS, and a rather poor 1.3mp Camera. processor-wise it's fast; like all WM devices it connects via Activesync. On the minus side, it's got a square screen, not that large at all (about 5.5cm square); on the plus side, it's a Windows Mobile 5 device, so everything for WM (NOT WM6 I hastily note) will run on it. Takes miniSD cards, I've got a 2gig card in mine, dunno if it'll take larger, no-one's tested that yet, afaik.

I've had mine for just over a year now, and it's an excellent bit of kit. I run TomTom6, MemoryMap 5, Pocket Informant 2007, and other software on it, with no complaints. The ringer is a tad weak in the volume department (typical of HP PPC phone devices, I've been told), but this is solved easily enough if you use a BT earpiece.

The touch screen (unlike many other PPC phones) is a joy, although the supplied transparent flip-cover will, I confirm, flip right off after a while, never to be used again, as the clip arms break off! Best to get one of those 3rd party screen protectors (cheap as chips from most good suppliers) before that happens.

I got mine retail, SIM free, for a shade over 500 notes through PC World Business; you can get them online for half that price. They are not, afaik, available on contract with any of the mobile providers in the uk, which is a hell of a shame, as this device is so much more useful than a blackberry!

Hope that helps!

I think the TyTN II is a bit too similar to my E650.

But if you look more closely they are very different beasts! I've got an S730 myself (successor to the S710/E650) and my wife has the TyTn II. Yours is a Smartphone, the other is a 'proper' Windows Mobile, as in much more flexible in terms of available software and touchscreen use.

The only reason I didn't go for the TyTn was its size: I want something that will fit reasonably in a pocket and looks & acts more like a phone than a PDA. If size didn't matter then the TyTn wins hands down. I have to admit that I'm hooked on the TyTn's GPS and borrow it as often as I can...

I also looked at the Touch/Touch Dual but felt that the qwerty keypad of the S730 was more useful to me than a software keypad. But if the Dual had WiFi or GPS then I would be seriously tempted.

After spending some more time contemplating this I was seriously thinking about going for the Touch Cruise. I had a look on the O2 website as I beleive they are calling it the Orbit II but I can't seem to find any mention of it.

But, after reading again (for about the 100th time) the description of the Touch Cruise, doesn't actually seem that much bigger than the SPV e650 (2.8" compared to 2.4") or does the extra 0.4" make a big difference??!!

Maybe I would be better off going for something that is a bit more PDA than phone as I tend to use the other functions more than the phone (ie internet, office etc)??

Any suggestions on a PDA type thing that has a phone too??!!

Thanks again

Surprisingly, .4" is actually a pretty significant size increase. Because the screens are measured diagonally, it adds quite a bit of size to the screen. I went from an HTC Shadow to a TYTN II, which is only a .2" increase in screen size and I felt that the increase was very big.

Both a TYTN II and a Touch/Touch Dual are going to be more PDA than Phone. The programs that they have are very much geared towards business users, which is really what differentiates them from an iPhone or the like. The possibilities for programs and modifications for these phones is also endless, and there are tons of tweaks that you can do with WM6 phones already.

hey lynda,

why don't you go for the MWg Atom Life its a pretty nifty pda-phone not the other way around. Its got almost everything except a GPSr its slightly smaller than the iPhone and i have neva seen the size of your phone but i think it will suit you just fine. Try browsing around at the MWg site or on eXpansys.

I'm getting one because the previous setup from O2 used to be problematic but users in the USA and UK so far haven't complained much, crossed finggers!

They have got a brand new stock in so hope you check it out.

Cheers!
