Guest jrzyGamEr Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Well i'm new to smartphones, just got my blackjack II yesterday.. not new to modding. I've overclocked it to 288Mhz without any issues, it's a noticable difference even though I noticed it resets to the default 256 when you turn off the phone.. makes sense but worth noting anyhow. The youtube hack is sweet!!! :) .. I changed the homepage.. I have mixed feelings about opera mini.. no firefox for smartphones? lol.. I havent done much visually except for a different background.. I would like to change the themes just dont feel like paying for facade just yet.. So that brings me to my main question.. what exactly is the advantage of purchasing Garmin XT vs just using google maps / windows live? I didn't do the gps hack and my gps locks on in about 5 - 30sec and is really accurate.. i had to set windows live to "intermediate driver" initially.. i have an average of 7 sattelites on the road and in my apartment which is on the ground level of a 2 story apartment, it ranges from 1-4 sattelites. note: i'm in the miami Florida area and these results are from testing the gps in rainy cloudy weather today that being said, what if anything is better about the Garmin software? better maps?
Guest Sed8ed Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 (edited) I think Garmin in probably the best. Route 66 does apparently work as well using the intermediate driver but I haven't used it. Garmin gives turn by turn voice direction and has alternate routing. I think the downfall is the cost..Garmin isn't cheap. Certainly not cheap for aussie map and SD card solution anyway. Basically Garmin is a standalone navigation system. It doesnt require a data connection to get directions..the map is permanently loaded as opposed to Google Maps and WLS which constantly need reception to a cell tower to work accurately. I also dont think you get any voice directions or prompts with either of two formentioned softwares. With Garmin you create full custom maps using mapsource (Garmin custom software). You can carry specific region maps rather than the entire map of your country.. For me Garmin is the only solution as I dont have a data plan to load map tiles as I move...google maps would be great if you could download sections of maps via PC first and then navigate with GPS when you dont need an internet connection.. Or have one. Hopefully Google and WLS will allow for custom map downloads in the future so that people can choose between data assisted nav or Gps only depending on their budgets...but this is probably unlikely. Guest thelostsoul Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 When I got my BJII, my original plan was to use GMAPs because it's free. But when I started using it, I realized I really needed turn-by-turn. I google for free turn-by-turn nav systems, and found two possible solution: Nav4All and AmazeGPS. Nav4All installs and has a WM version, but doesn't detect the GPS system, even if the COM4 hacks are installed. AmazeGPS is apparently much better than Nav4All, but they claim the WM version is still in development. I then found a friend of mine had a Garmin Mobile XT card that he wasn't using, so I purchased it from him at a well discounted price, and am definitely satisfied with it. I'm not sure I would have paid the full retail price for it, but it's definitely a good application. If you need turn by turn navigation, I'd say you have two options: buy Garmin, or wait for Amaze, where their release schedule seems to be indefinite, so...

Guest jrzyGamEr Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 If you do have a data package Garmin also has Traffic Conditions/Weather and Fuel Prices not sure about Google or Windows Live? yeah i got a data package.. windows live has traffic conditions, weather & fuel prices.. i've only tried out the fuel price feature so far.. pretty cool. but turn by turn navigation alone makes it worth spending the cash for garmin
Guest jyalexop2003 Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 If you do have a data package Garmin also has Traffic Conditions/Weather and Fuel Prices not sure about Google or Windows Live? WLS has Fuel prices, theaters, traffic and Speech recognition. The speech is awesome..
