Guest Sharone Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I don't have any audible SMS tone or vibration, despite going into sounds and notifications, and checking the box, and changing the tone. It doesn't matter which tone I choose - one that came with the device, or one of my own, it doesn't seem to play anything when a message is received. I've restarted after selecting, and I don't have any out of the ordinary software installed. What's the problem?
Guest WearTheFoxHat Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 First ... daft question ... but you do have the volume turned up don't you? Second, when you go into file manager and click on the sound ... which application opens it? The tone, be it mp3 or wav, has to be associated with Windows Media player to work.

Yes, the volume is up, and yes Media Player opens the file. Even the Alarm 1 - 5 that come with the phone, that are WMA files don't work. That's why I haven't bothered trying to convert my mp3 files to WMA, because they don't seem to be recognized either. It's really weird.
Guest WearTheFoxHat Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Sorry, I'm stuck then. Anyone else?
Guest Confucious Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Start->settings-> Sounds and notifications Sounds tab programs = checked and Notifications(alarms, reminders) = checked Notifications tab - Play sounds = checked Event - Messaging: New text Message Can you select an Alarm sound? If so, does it play when you click on the play button to test it?

If so, does it play when you click on the play button to test it? All checked. And when I press the play button - the sound plays. It just doesn't play when the SMS is actually received. (On the sounds tab Screen Taps and Hardware Buttons are not checked - and on notifications Flash light for.. is not checked, but I don't think these are relevant.) Is there any way to create profiles. I'm afraid it might be associated with that somehow. I use the profile tool on the HTC Home Screen to switch between profiles - but I don't know how to edit these profiles.
Guest Confucious Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Have you tried the standard profile? i assume you have, but thought I'd ask anyway. If it plays when you test it then there are only 2 possibilities I can think of, either: a) your profile is somehow being 'switches' to disable notifications - but if you go back into settings and they are still theer I don't think this is the case. The other thing: :) whatever triggers the sound isn't recognizing that a text is being received. Does a new text message show up when you receive one? Which country / network are you with? You're not using SMS over GPRS are you? or anything else strange?

I do see a new text message - the screen lights up, but no sound. It was on GSM, now I changed it to GSM preferred for the receipt. I'm Orange Israel. I have a USim and all, so I don't know what the problem is. It recognizes the SMS settings automatically. (I checked that the SMS number is correct...I just don't get it.)
Guest Alkali Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Sharone, Back up your device and hard reset! It is better to get it back to working status than worry status.
Guest Confucious Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Sharone - I am stumped, I've not heard of this before and as no one else has come up with an answer I think Alkali's suggestion is probably the next thing to try - good luck, let us know if it sorts it. If it works after a hard reset then install all your programs one at a time checking in between each to make sure it still works. Let us know the outcome. Good luck1

Good luck1 So it turns out that it was the first manifestation of the complete deterioration of the phone. I ended having to hard reset last night - because it stopped moving altogether. I couldn't open any programs, especially SMS', froze in the middle of phone calls, then it stopped recognizing my SIM card completely. I tried uninstalling the language that I had installed, because I thought the problem was there, and tried soft-resetting a number of times, but nothing helped. I couldn't even backup, because it was completely frozen. Oh well, after the hard reset, everything seems to be working...for now. This is my second hard reset on the phone within a month...this concerns me more than anything. Has anyone else had serious problems like these? The first time, after installing a few programs, nothing seemed to run either. The phone just kept freezing up every two minutes. I hope this isn't going to be all the time now. Yikes.
Guest Alkali Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I hope this isn't going to be all the time now. Yikes. The problem must be with your programs and will keep on coming until you delete the culprit. The best way to go about it is install programs one by one on a daily basis until you find the wrong guy.Best luck :)
