Guest 246810 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I’m very confused about VOIP and how to get it working on my MDA Vario III as the calls work out much cheaper. I’ve read reports about there being issues with several programmes around. Is there an application that works which can enable someone to call someone over the internet? Perhaps someone who has got it to work adequately can respond
Guest hotphil Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I believe Skype will work. The only slight downers being you need to have a good enough signal for adequate data transfer and, perhaps more importantly, the hardware design of the handset means that such applications can't use the normal earpiece - sound has to play through the rear speaker or through headphones/handsfree kit.
Guest WearTheFoxHat Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Thats my understanding too ... although I didnt know it worked with the headset ... thats much better news!

Thanks for this. I tried the skype website, but came under the impression that you had to be on '3 network' in the UK to use skype. I have the MDA Vario III on T Mobiles network. Can someone talk me through step by step in getting it to work Thank
Guest WearTheFoxHat Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 On T-Mobile, unless you are using Web n Walk MAX, then you cannot use Skype over the GPRS network. You must only use it on Wifi networks. This is fine, because Skype has a setting "wifi only" or "Gprs and wifi" (or similar). You need to install the Pocket PC version: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/s.../windowsmobile/ Get the top one!

I'm not sure, but I think this may have been implied? Also, for wifi surfing, what is the rough cost incurred? Also, on xda developers, there are cabs called 'Setup VOIP' and 'Duttythroy V3 Voice setup'. What are these for? And I hear some people are using an application called 'Fring' to access skype, how and why? Edited January 28, 2008 by 246810
Guest hotphil Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Thanks! Am I correct in believing that using wifi for skype is free? I'm not sure, but I think this may have been implied? yes, providing you have access to a wifi point - but you may need to pay for access to the wifi hotspot. Also, for wifi surfing, what is the rough cost incurred? depends how much you're paying for access to the wifi hotspot - but you don't incur charges on your mobile bill Also, on xda developers, there are cabs called 'Setup VOIP' and 'Duttythroy V3 Voice setup'. What are these for? no idea And I hear some people are using an application called 'Fring' to access skype, how and why?i think fring is a program that will connect you to several different messaging services using one client application

Perhaps you can answer some of the questions on my new thread.
