WIth my fat fingers I find it hard to accurately dial the right contact. Does anyone know of an app that presents the contacts in a larger format?

Try Pocket CM - it's being actively developed at the moment, so has a few rough edges, but is many people's contact manager of choice.

I have installed pocket informant, which is a much improved diary, task and contact manager. It has a very "ipod touch-esque" interface for contacts, where you can have picture lists or large text names. And you can scroll by wiping your finger up and down the screen. Great for fat fingers like mine!
