wrong audio file association - no ringing tone!

Hi there,

a few days ago I installed GSPlayer on my s710. The program works fine. Then I found the option for file association and thought: GSPlayer is my audio player...so let him play all audio formats. I did the association and the next day I was wondering why I have some missed calls but didn't hear the phone ringing. It seems that the audio file association for wma-files prevents the phone from using wma-files as ringing tones.

The same for my alarm program Chronos Alarm: the program can use mp3's, ogg, wav etc. but after the association of sound files with GSPlayer no alarm is sounding.

Could it be that ringing tones and phone alarms use the Windows Media Player in the background and since the audio files are no longer associated with it, it just refuses to play them? But when I pick a mp3 directly with the media player it still is able to play it.

I thought file association is just for making the phone sure with what application a file is to be opened in the first place...

Does anyone had the same experience?

Greetings from Cologne/Germany

Your assumption is correct.

Ringtone file-types need to be associated with WMP and you can use a file explorer (like Binarys Smart Explorer or Resco) to reassociate them.

This is quite a common problem but is easily solved

Thanks Disco Stu. I managed to reassociate them by unassociating them in GSPlayer.

But I don't see the logic in the association of ringing and alarm tones with WMP. I give the exact path to the audio file...so both alarm and ringing player should be able to play them. On a desktop computer it is no problem to associate mp3s with e.g. winamp and all other programs can still work with these files.

But I think WM6 is no XP or Vista...even if some people tune their smartphones so they look like Vista phones ;-)

well i had pretty much had the same problem, but mine was with mp3s that came up as unknown file types. so i used resco to associate them with wmp, and it works fine ringtones with mp3 work too, but now all my mp3 files have the icones as the unknown file typ icons. It's not really that much of a problem, but visually i don't really like it. is yours that way too with wma's? or did they change back to the little wmp icon

Hi i had the same Problem of loosing filetype association i used totalcommander to reassign .mp3 to WMP but it still wont work. When "clicking" a file in the explorer, i get a file not found error.

The filename in the properties only shows the last word after a space of the filename and then .mp3.

I.e.: "01-Interpret - Song of Album.mp3" shows up in WMP as "Album.mp3"

No path and missing parts of the filename.

Does anyone have any advice?
