Exchange Server Sync Issues

Hi there,

I have flashed my SPV e650 to the latest HTC firmware and set up activesync with my work's exchange server. The phone syncs fine when connected via active sync and I can search the company address book and send/receive email etc, but when I am away from my computer I cannot get push email or any syncing with the exchange server via GPRS.

I have checked my GPRS and that works fine with Internet explorer so I am not sure what the problem is.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I have a feeling this has something to do with VPN settings.

It wont sync unless my laptop is connected via the VPN, which will explain why it wont sync OTA.

Any ideas how I can sort this out?

Certificates?

Sounds like you are not using the external url for your server.

If it works when you are connected to the LAN or VPN's into the LAN, then you must be using your internal server name like: London-Server-1

For OTA connection, you need the correct URL eg : https://mail.londoncompany.com

Usually you can just enter your outlook web access address but you may need to import the ssl certificate too.

Pocket Internet Explorer, Outllook Web Accesss
Yes, but I want to use the phone to manage my email directly by syncing it with the MS exchange server

Sounds about right, but the VPN connection only works with IE as it loads an exe vpn program, so I don't think that will work on PIE.

Are they all three installed ?

I'm using the Exhange direct push functionality with my own exchange 2003 server. Make sure that on the server under allowed services owa etc is enabled. You also need to create the desired certificates. I've installed my own Certificate Authority and used that. In IIS at the exchange virtual folder I enabled the ssl security and selected the created certificate. I the exported the certificate to pfx format. I copied that certificate to my phone and also copied a program called pfximport. I then doubleclicked the certificate and it tells me that 2 certificates are installed on the phone. 1 in the personal storage and 1 in the root storage (This last one is very important otherwise it wont work). I then setup my phone to add a server source in active sync on my phone. The address must be the url of the webmail of your exchange server. In my case webmail.xxxxxxxx.nl. Don't use http or https in front of it. Then tick this server requires ssl connection. Then give the username for the local domain and password (this is important if your dns domain name locally is diiferent form the one on the internet; for instance blabla.nl and blabla.local) Then make sure that the date and time of the exchange server and the phone do not differ more then 15 minutes (so also check the timezone settings). Now everything should work ok. You can only synchronize email with one source. Either outlook email or Microsoft Exchange. Not both. So my phone (S710) sync email, agenda, notes etc. via Exchange and files via active sync. If you need further advice ask here. Maybe through msn orso I can help you.

You dont use a VPN with exchange server and direct push. Just as you dont use one with OWA. If you have OWA (outlook web access) then enter the OWA address as your server address. This uses the OWA port in to your server and the server's external domain name - and thus you dont have to VPN in to your network first.
